During Southwest’s investor day back in September, it announced that it would be bringing on its first international airline partner. Today, Icelandair and Southwest Airlines signed a strategic partnership agreement.
Southwest is beginning to build a global network. Icelandair will serve as a good first partner to help with connectivity to Europe and Southwest is looking to add a second in 2025. With the addition of partners, it looks to be able to get its passengers to more destinations as well as to provide Rapid Rewards members with additional earning and redemption opportunities.
Icelandair and Southwest will initially partner through Baltimore/Washington International Thurgood Marshall Airport (BWI). They will then add Denver International Airport (DEN) and Nashville International Airport (BNA) later in the year. European passengers will now have access to flights across the United States and a seamless travel experience is coming soon.
Tómas Ingason, Icelandair’s Chief Commercial Officer, said:
We are very excited to formalize our partnership with Southwest today and honored to be chosen as Southwest’s first airline partner. The partnership will open new and exciting connections for our customers onwards with Southwest to numerous destinations in North America, and at the same time, their customers will benefit from our extensive connections to Iceland and onwards to Europe. We welcome Southwest to our impressive partnership portfolio in the US and ever-growing group of partner airlines and look forward to working together in offering our customers a smooth and enjoyable travel experiences.”
Ryan Green, Southwest Airlines Executive Vice President & Chief Transformation Officer, added:
It’s fitting for us to launch this chapter of industry-standard airline partnerships with our longtime friends, Icelandair. Beyond an ability to offer each other’s Customers access to new destinations and like-minded travel experiences centered around hospitality and value, we’re grateful to have been guided by their expertise and best practices in building our program.”
Anthony’s Take: Starting in February, Icelandair and Southwest Airlines will offer passengers of both carriers a seamless travel experience. More details will be released in the near future.
