Ibiza Airport (IBZ) was forced to shutdown today after a passenger allegedly made a bomb threat on a flight that was headed for Milan’s Orio al Serio International Airport (BGY). Flights that were destined for Ibiza ended up diverting to Palma de Mallorca Airport (PMI).

Around 3:30 PM local time, the alarm was sounded and arriving flights were diverted as authorities determined that the threat was a hoax. The passenger was on board the Ryanair flight when he claimed to have a bomb with him. Flight operations resumed around 4:30 PM. Police arrested the male passenger who was reportedly intoxicated. The aircraft was forced to turn around after departure.

The Daily Mail shared this statement from a spokesperson for the airport said:

There has been a security incident on a plane at Ibiza Airport and the Civil Guard has taken charge of the situation. Normal flight operations at the airport were suspended for around 45 minutes.”

No word has been released around the passenger’s motive for claiming that he was carrying a bomb on the aircraft.

Anthony’s Take: There are some words never to be uttered on a flight and bomb is at the top of the list. It’s good that this was not real and it will be interesting to see his reason for the claim.
