The Hyatt Place St. Augustine/Vilano Beach is under fire for its “mandatory valet parking fee.” You might be thinking that lots of hotels charge for parking, but not when you don’t drive a vehicle to the property. This Hyatt Place is adding a $25 charge to every guest room per night.
This first popped up in a LinkedIn post and has since been making its rounds through the travel blogs like One Mile at a Time and View from the Wing. The LinkedIn poster was hit with a $75 charge for their three-night stay. They got it waived, but had to go through the hassle of waiting for a manager to make an exception. When you look to book this hotel, this fee is disclosed as a hotel policy.
But, it never says that it is mandatory for every guest and does not even show when you go to book your room. This is dishonest and ridiculous if you’re not parking a car at a hotel. It’s like adding a charge for two cocktails to every folio even if you never have a drink. Part of being branded within a hotel portfolio is following the rules and guidelines set by the brand. I can’t imagine that Hyatt will be thrilled with this negative publicity, but it has been slow to move in other past situations so we’ll need to wait and see how this is addressed.
Anthony’s Take: This fee is ridiculous and not properly disclosed. I hope Hyatt comes down hard on the property and makes them get rid of this junk fee and refund those that have had it stolen from them.
