We spent two nights doing Christmas-y things in New York City before heading to see family in NJ for the holidays. While in New York we spent time at one of my favorite hotels in the city. I used to stay at the Hyatt Union Square New York monthly when my office was located nearby. It had been a few years since I had been a guest and I’m happy to report that the hotel is almost as nice as I remember.

Anthony’s Take: The Hyatt Union Square New York has a wonderful staff, nice rooms and suites, a convenient location, and was so festive for the holidays. I used a Suite Upgrade Award and enjoyed staying in the Empyreal Suite again. It’s spacious, nicely decorated, and served as the perfect home base for our Christmas sightseeing.

Hyatt Uinon Square Booking

Booking

I booked a 1 King Bed with Courtyard Views room on a “Member Rate.” It was $299 including fees. These fees include a $30 Destination Fee that is waived for Globalists. The hotel falls under Category 6 with award rates for standard rooms ranging from 21,000 to 29,000 points.

Hyatt Upgrade

I used a Suite Upgrade Award to automatically book myself into the suite online. This functionality was recently added to Hyatt.com.

Transportation to/from the Hotel

I took an Uber Comfort from New York LaGuardia Airport (LGA). It took around 27 minutes to drive the 9 miles. The ride cost $78. We rented a car and drove to NJ after our stay.

Check-In

We arrived at the hotel around 6:00 PM and the suite was ready. The agent assisting me was friendly and asked if I needed a late checkout (I did not). She also told me that I was upgraded to the Empyreal Suite, which I already knew. She then handed me a card with all of the Destination Fee inclusions and said that breakfast was in the restaurant as it always had been. I had our keys and vouchers for breakfast a moment later and we were off to the suite.

We were offered prosecco at check in.

Hyatt Union Square 6

A water dispenser is set up near the elevators for guest consumption.

Hyatt Union Square 8

The elevators were not working well during our visit and one was out of service.

Hyatt Union Square 9

The elevator lobby and hallway on our floor was clean and in good repair.

Hyatt Union Square 10

Empyreal Suite (1111)

There are 178 rooms and suites at the hotel.

Hyatt Union Square 11

The suite opens with a table and chairs on the left side.

Hyatt Union Square 27

Hyatt Union Square 12

A cabinet nearby held a coffeemaker, bottled water, coffee, cups, condiments and a refrigerator drawer that was not working.

Hyatt Union Square 13

The water was complimentary for elite members.

Hyatt Union Square 14

The refrigerator drawer below was not operational.

Hyatt Union Square 15

Another refrigerator was in the corner. It held drinks for sale and empty space for guest use. Snacks for sale were also found here.

Hyatt Union Square 16

The living area is to the right of the dining area. There was a couch, chair, TV, and table were found here.

Hyatt Union Square 17

A TV was mounted inside of a cabinet across from the couch.

Hyatt Union Square 18

The living area was spacious and comfortable.

Hyatt Union Square 34

The suite offered a nice view.

Hyatt Union Square 19

I liked that all of the lights and shades had automatic controls.

Hyatt Union Square 33

I also thought this light fixture was cool.

Hyatt Union Square 20

The bedroom was on the right when entering the suite. It’s not a huge room, but fit a king-sized bed, nightstands, and a wardrobe.

Hyatt Union Square 21

The bed was comfortable.

Hyatt Union Square 22

A wardrobe filled the entire wall across from the bed.

Hyatt Union Square 23

The TV was inside of the mirror.

Hyatt Union Square 24

Closets were on both sides. One held and umbrella, luggage rack, iron and ironing board.

Hyatt Union Square 25

The other had space to hang clothes.

Hyatt Union Square 26

A safe was found in one of the drawers.

Hyatt Union Square 28

The bathroom was near the bedroom. It was an accessible bathroom, but I did not mind it (I’m usually not a fan). It held a toilet, vanity with a single sink, and open shower. A bar of soap and some lotion were on the counter.

Hyatt Union Square 29

Robes and slippers were found next to the sink.

Hyatt Union Square 30

The toilet was spaced with lots of room around it.

Hyatt Union Square 31

The shower was large with good water pressure and temperature. It held a bench and had a weird chainmail shower curtain.

Hyatt Union Square 32

Bottles of The Botanist & The Chemist shampoo, conditioner, and shower gel were mounted to the wall.

Hyatt Union Square 32

Shelves in the bathroom held additional toiletries and towels.

Breakfast

Breakfast is offered to Globalist members in the Bowery Road restaurant. It’s a nice place, but the service was poor and food quality was just okay. They ran out of potatoes during our visit and the server never returned after he realized we had a breakfast voucher and took our order.

Hyatt Union Square 40

My husband and I both had the Organic Egg Sandwich. It was mediocre.

Hyatt Union Square 41

The restaurant was pretty empty during our visit.

Public Areas & Amenities

The hotel has a fitness center, bikes that can be borrowed, a large bar known as the Library of Distilled Spirits (pictured above), a rooftop bar that was closed during our visit, and Bowery Road restaurant.

Hyatt Union Square 43

The bikes were outside. It was too cold and snowy to ride them.

Hyatt Union Square 44

The fitness center is located one level below the lobby.

Hyatt Union Square 45

Hyatt Union Square 46

It’s a good size with lots of equipment.

Hyatt Union Square 47

Hyatt Union Square 48

I liked that there were Peloton Bikes and lots of other cardio machines.

Hyatt Union Square 49

The fitness center offered complimentary towels, oranges, apples, and earbuds.

Hyatt Union Square 50

A fancy flavored water machine was nearby.

Overall Impression:

The Hyatt Union Square New York offers a great location, nice amenities, and a comfortable, boutique design. I’ll definitely be back.
