After spending a few nights in New York City at the Hyatt Union Square New York (review here), we were off to visit family in New Jersey and needed something central. I went to college in New Brunswick (at Rutgers) and have stayed at the Hyatt Regency New Brunswick multiple times through the years. The hotel’s rooms and suites are being renovated and refreshed. We were lucky enough to be upgraded into the brand new Presidential Suite for our two-night stay.
Anthony’s Take: The hotel is centrally located and a great choice for parents visiting their kids at Rutgers or needing to be in New Brunswick for leisure or business travel. I loved the renovated suite and think the hotel will be even more appealing once the restaurant reopens. Having a comped room service breakfast as a Globalist was a nice benefit (even though they messed up the orders both mornings). I wish the hotel had a lounge, but it makes up for it with a generous breakfast benefit.
Booking
I booked a 1 King Bed room on a “Member Rate.” It was $201 including fees per night. The hotel falls under Category 2 with award rates for standard rooms ranging from 6,500 to 9,500 points. This is a great value if you’re looking to use World of Hyatt® points.
I noticed the day before check-in that we were upgraded to the Presidential Suite.
Transportation to/from the Hotel
We rented a car and drove between the Hyatt Union Square New York and the Hyatt Regency New Brunswick. It took around 44 minutes for the 36-mile drive.
Location
The Hyatt Regency New Brunswick is located in the downtown area near lots of restaurants and Rutgers University as well as the train station and many businesses. It’s also a quick hop off the highway, which makes it easy to get anywhere in NJ.
We entered through the parking garage and down a hallway to the lobby. Stairs lead to meeting space.
The lobby is wide open without a lot of seating or other furniture. A Korean megachurch was holding a convention during our stay and common areas were packed with people.
There were a few tables and couches near the restaurant.
Check-In
We arrived at the hotel around 9:00 PM and the suite was ready. The agent assisting us was friendly and asked if we needed a late checkout (we did not). He also told me that we were upgraded to the Presidential Suite, which I already knew. I had our keys and we were off to the suite a minute later.
The elevator lobby and hallways were clean and recently renovated.
The hallways are not the brightest, but not as dark as some I’ve encountered.
Presidential Suite (315)
There are 288 rooms including 14 suites at the hotel.
The suite is spacious and feels like an apartment. It opens with a half bath that includes a sink and toilet.
I liked the modern mirror and great lighting.
A bar of Pharmacopia brand soap was on the counter.
A bottle of Pharmacopia Body Lotion was mounted to the wall.
Straight ahead, you’ll find a dining area.
The table sat six and was a good spot for breakfast each day.
The kitchen area was behind the dining table. It offered three more seats at the counter.
The kitchen included a full-size refrigerator, sink, and microwave.
The fridge was empty for guest use.
The microwave was mounted below the counter and across from the sink.
The Nespresso machine, frother, coffee pods, and condiments were on the counter.
There were also bottles of water (that were free for elite members) and an ice bucket found here.
The living area was across from the dining table. It held a couch, a TV, a coffee table, and a few chairs.
The couch was comfortable.
Two chairs were near the window.
A nearby closet held an iron.
The bedroom was off of the living room. It contained a king-sized bed, two nightstands, a desk and chair, as well as more storage and a TV.
The desk was near the windows.
Another chair was in the corner.
The TV was mounted above a low cabinet that was great for storing open suitcases.
The bed was comfortable and we slept well both nights here.
Another closet held the ironing board (not sure why it was not with the iron), a safe, and a luggage rack.
The en-suite bathroom was a good size. It offered tons of counter space (but only one sink), a toilet, and a glassed-in shower.
Lots of towels were stacked on the counter. Another bottle of lotion was wall mounted here.
A second bar of Pharmacopia soap was on the counter.
The toilet was spaced far enough away from the counter.
The shower was spacious. Both water pressure and temperature were fine.
Pharmacopia Shampoo, Conditioner, and Body Wash were mounted to the shower wall.
Breakfast
The Glass Woods Tavern restaurant was closed during our visit. At check-in, I was told that we could order room service. We were not provided with a dollar amount and both ordered an entree with juice each day without issue. I’m sure coffee would be included as well, but I ran out for Starbucks.
The menu offered a nice selection. We tried an Omelet and the Challah French Toast one day (pictured above). The next day we had the Smoked Salmon and Avocado Bagel and Buttermilk Pancakes. The restaurant messed up the orders both days. One day the juice was dropped and needed to be replaced and the second they forgot one entree. All items were removed from the folio after a quick call to the front desk. This should have been removed for being a Globalist, but it was not when I was ready to checkout. The agent quickly made it go away with a few keystrokes.
Public Areas & Amenities
The hotel has a fitness center, a pool (pictured above), Glass Woods Tavern restaurant, an ATM, and multiple conference spaces and ballrooms. We did not have the chance to use any of the amenities during our visit.
The fitness center is an adequate size and has a Peloton bike.
The ATM is near the lobby.
The restaurant is located next to reception. It was closed during our stay.
Overall Impression:
The Hyatt Regency New Brunswick offers a great location, beautifully remodeled rooms and suites, and great elite treatment. I’ll definitely be back in the future.
