The crackdown on illegal immigrants in the United States has reached a boiling point with protests in major cities and a sense of fear spreading through many communities (even those whose residents are legally in the country). An incident unfolded this week where a student from India was handcuffed, arrested, and set to be deported at Newark Liberty International Airport (EWR). The problem? He was in the United States with a student visa, but detained on suspicion of misusing his visa status.
Video hit social media this week of an Indian student being assaulted and pinned to the ground like a criminal. This video shows his arrest and what led to him being scheduled for immediate deportation. The incident at the airport apparently took its toll on him as Indian Express says he was “admitted to a medical facility.”
I’m not sure what transpired to arise the suspicion of US Customs and Border Protection, but it’s sad that we have gotten to this point. Do I think people should enter the United States illegally? Absolutely not. Do I think we should mistreat people without due process and treat them like criminals? Emphatically, no. It also does not make sense to me how he was allowed to fly into the United States. If he was departing the United States he should have been allowed to go. If this was a domestic flight than that makes more sense.
Anthony’s Take: All of the details around this story are not available, but a student with a reported visa was detained, arrested, and potentially (by now) deported. While he should not have been allowed to remain in the US if his visa was not valid, he did not need to be taken to the ground like a criminal.

How can we possibly know whether or not this is truly “horrifying” without knowing all — really any — of the details of why he was detained or being deported? Don’t forget that the 9/11 terrorists also misused their student visas and it would not have been at all “horrifying” if this were to have happened to them before they were able to plan, train, and carry out their attack. Perhaps he is an innocent babe in the woods caught in a whirlwind of hate, but perhaps the opposite or somewhere in the middle is true. In any case, I won’t judge by an out of context photo, and you shouldn’t either.
ADDED: having read an article from a site in India, the basic premise of the post that he was a student on a visa turns out already to be inaccurate in that he had no visa and apparently entered the USA illegally. I also learned that he is Haryana, and people unfamiliar with India will not likely be aware that Haryana is quite famous for the Gangs of Rohtak, which is an area controlled largely by dangerous criminal gangs active also in the USA (with several members in US prisons).
I really don’t think you know what it takes to board a plane from a foreign country. They don’t let people board without proper documentation. And it is so convenient for this person to be a part of this gang and they found this out in a day. Thanks for making things up.
Really, and how did the attackers on 9/11 got into the country? Did they just fall from the sky?
“I’m not sure what transpired…”
EXACTLY. You’re not sure what transpired.
Put the revenue from my click to good use won’t you.
Exactly. Anthony admits he has no idea what he’s talking about, yet that doesn’t stop him from concluding this is “OUTRAGEOUS!”. This is exactly the unthinking mentality that leads to the chaos we see from the LA mobs and is only serving to make everything worse.
Use your travel blog for good, not evil. Is that too much to ask?
I stand by what I wrote from what has been shown in the video and the other article. If he’s proven to be a gang member than I agree he does not belong here and should be removed. I do not agree with the mobs that have taken to the streets in LA to cause chaos and destruction. The right to assemble and peaceful protest have my full support. Assaulting law enforcement, causing damage to property, and becoming an unruly mob will never see me saying “that’s ok.”
Is being a “gang member” the only reason to be deemed inadmissable?
You admit you didn’t know the details of something that triggered your “horrifying” take on this incident, but still stubbornly stand by your uninformed take. Not a great look here, Tony. Much better and easier to just admit you are wrong and move on.
Or feel free to stand by your shoddy, over-emotional and uninformed political posting.
All details have not been released. What I see here is a scared kid. He clearly is not armed or posing an immediate danger. Illegal or not (since this needs to be clarified), can we at least agree that people should not be manhandled and forced to the ground when the situation seems like it does not warrant that?
If you don’t comply with an arrest (also known as resisting that arrest), law enforcement officers are permitted to use force to effect that arrest. It’s not a negotiation, it’s an arrest……whether it’s a DUI or immigration issue.
Always astounds me when businesses, including blogs, enter strong opinions on politically sensitive topics without even doing a cursory search for information beyond a twitter post.
This will be my last click on thebulkheadseat.
Here’s the statement from the Indian consulate:
With regard to a social post about an Indian national detained at Newark Airport in New Jersey in the United States, our Consulate in New York has ascertained that the individual who belongs to Haryana had entered the United States illegally without a valid visa and was being deported back to India as per a court order,” the sources said.
Upon finding his behaviour not conducive for travel, the student was restrained and admitted to a medical facility during his transit in Newark, they said. The government sources further said that the student will be deported to India once he is fit to travel. “Our Consulate in New York continues to remain engaged with the US authorities on this matter,” they added.
Seems like being turned around for lack of valid visa was appropriate.
Seems like being restrained when displaying “ behaviour not conducive for travel” was reasonable, as well.
Welp, there we have it. Anthony, any else “horrifying” you tonight?
Good comment. I’m with you. My last click to this site as well. I didn’t realize until now what an idiot this guy Anthony is
I’m surprised in you Anthony you always seem to be a pillar of reason and now this bleeding heart crap comes out of nowhere. Since you don’t know any of the details, let the authorities do their job. And it’s not “horrifying.” Grow up.
I still contend that holding this kid to the ground is pretty awful. If he was here illegally, he should be deported. But, he still is a human being and the fact that he needed medical attention says he wasn’t treated all that nicely in my opinion. I’m really not considered a “bleeding heart” but watching this video in the way that he was treated struck me as wrong. Now, once again, if he was here illegally he should be removed, but I don’t think he needed to be held to the ground the way that he was in the videos.
And committing crimes is pretty awful too. So, since you don’t know the whole story, why prefabricate theories? Just for the clicks, got it. Never clicking your site again. So long!
The word “Horrifying” in the title should be immediately edited (removed).
None of what happened is “horrifying.”
This would work for a title:
“US Immigration Authorities Arrest Indian Student With invalid Visa at Newark Airport”
Horrifying: US blogger uses a picture of a detained person in a vulnerable situation (without his consent) for personal profit
THIS BLOG IS CENSORING MY VALID COMMENTS
A BETTER TITLE:
US Immigration Authorities Arrest Indian Student With Invalid Visa at Newark Airport
Sad to see Mr. Losanno going the clickbait route. I guess it pays off for some blogs financially.
“Horrifying” is a conclusion…which you admittedly made in advance of knowing all the facts. You most likely did this because the conclusion supports your personal political biases.
Are you kidding me?!? I’m not a Trump supporter but posts like this are what creates them.
You have no idea what happened, you didn’t bother to do a cursory Google search which reveals that he was indeed not eligible to enter, and then screech about this being “horrifying” on the same day hundreds of people died in a plane crash.
Pathetic.
You bloggers are nothing but Karen’s. I don’t know what happened or why but it was awful. Get a life, don’t be Gary.
Hey MAGA crowd, if you can’t handle a blogger with a different point of view than yours making a reasonable point, head over to View from the Wing. Gary will be happy to reinforce your support for authoritarian governance.
The left hate it when we point out their deranged takes. Amirite, Camus? lol
