Hawaiian Airlines is celebrating Lei Day by distributing 1,500 leis today. More will be distributed at pop-up lei stands in Los Angeles, Salt Lake City, and Tokyo, as well as running a sweepstakes that will give away four million HawaiianMiles. The event runs throughout the month of May.
Hawaii’s hometown airline is extending its traditional May Day festivities this year to run the full month of May to honor the legacies of May Day, which dates back 95 years to 1929. Throughout the month, Hawaiian will share the act of giving leis at pop-up lei stands in three cities, a global sweepstakes that will award four million HawaiianMiles, and other surprises throughout the month.
Following today’s airport lei surprise, the festivities will kickoff with the annual Hawaiian Airlines May Day concert at Bishop Museum in Honolulu. Hawaiian will then host pop-up events at The Atrium at Westfield Century City in Los Angeles on May 11th, City Creek Center in Salt Lake City on May 18th, and Ebisu Garden Place in Tokyo on May 31st. Each event will feature a lei stand experience, orchids to pin in guests’ hair, flower leis, exclusive campaign merchandise, and passion orange guava flavored cotton candy. Live music and hula dancing will also be provided by the Hawaiian Airlines Serenaders.
The generous sweepstakes will offer 200,000 HawaiianMiles each week in May to five winners located within its major markets including Australia, Japan, New Zealand, South Korea, and the United States. The sweepstakes will see 20 winners receive a combined four million HawaiianMiles through the 31 Days of Lei global sweepstakes. You can enter online here.
Rob Sorensen, Vice President of Marketing and e-Commerce at Hawaiian Airlines, said:
31 Days of Lei is our love letter to Hawaiʻi’s tradition of giving lei – it’s a chance to celebrate this enduring symbol of aloha. Extending the celebration for the whole month is a way to share the beloved gesture of sharing lei with a global audience.”
Anthony’s Take: One of the things that people who have never been to Hawaii picture is the floral lei upon arrival. This is no longer done on arriving flights, but Hawaiian is bringing this back today along with a generous sweepstakes this month.
