With just six months remaining until American Airlines marks its centennial, the carrier is unveiling a new special-edition livery that celebrates nearly a century of aviation excellence. The design, which will debut in November on a Boeing 777-300ER registered as N735AT, pays homage to American’s past while symbolizing its commitment to a modern, forward-looking future.

The centennial livery reimagines one of American’s original designs, incorporating the Silver Eagle® paint scheme now seen across more than 1,600 aircraft in the airline’s mainline and regional fleet. A bold orange lightning bolt motif stretches across both sides of the fuselage (a striking nod to the design first seen nearly 90 years ago on the Douglas DC-3).

Flagship DC-3

The DC-3 was a pioneering aircraft that ushered in the era of luxury air travel for American Airlines. Its legacy of comfort and prestige continues today with the Boeing 777-300ER, the airline’s flagship for long-haul routes connecting the United States to destinations across Australia, Japan, the United Kingdom, and beyond.

In keeping with tradition, American will name the aircraft “Flagship DFW,” honoring the airline’s largest hub and corporate home at Dallas Fort Worth International Airport (DFW). Near the tail, passengers will spot the eagle connecting the world emblem (one of the airline’s most enduring and recognizable symbols, representing both American’s heritage and its global reach to more than 350 destinations).

The new livery and upgraded aircraft interior reinforce American’s long-standing Flagship® experience, first introduced in the 1930s to distinguish premium transcontinental service. Today, the Flagship brand encompasses the airline’s top-tier lounges, Business Class products, and international services.

American Flagship

Next year, American will begin a fleetwide interior refresh of its Boeing 777-300ERs, introducing Flagship Suite® seats, Premium Economy enhancements, and upgraded amenities across all cabins. The redesign represents American’s ongoing investment in elevating comfort, technology, and design across its international fleet.

The refreshed Boeing 777-300ERs will feature 70 Flagship Suite® seats and 44 Premium Economy seats. The new Flagship Suite® seats mark American’s most advanced business-class product to date. Each suite features sliding privacy doors, wireless charging pads, and a unique chaise lounge configuration with an adjustable headrest pillow.

In Premium Economy, American becomes the first US carrier to introduce wireless charging at every seat, alongside redesigned headrests and enhanced calf and footrests for greater comfort on long-haul flights.

Passengers in the Main Cabin will also enjoy major upgrades, including 4K QLED entertainment screens, which makes American the first US airline to offer this in in an Economy Class cabin (as well as USB-C and AC power outlets at every seat).

American Airlines’ centennial celebration honors a legacy that began in 1926 with a single mail route and has grown into the world’s largest airline by passengers carried. The unveiling of this new aircraft and livery reflects both nostalgia and forward-looking ambition (a blend of the airline’s pioneering past and its ongoing drive to redefine the future of air travel).

Ron DeFeo, American’s Chief Communications Officer, said:

American has thoughtfully chosen a design that evokes our rich history while looking ahead to our next 100 years. Throughout American’s history, ‘Flagship®’ has always been recognized as our premium travel experience. Our renewed focus on the customer experience is making premium travel better than ever across all aspects of our customers’ travel journeys. Painting the original Flagship® design on our Flagship® aircraft is a powerful way to honor that legacy while embracing the future.”

Anthony’s Take: I love special liveries and hope to see this one (and Delta’s 100th) in person at some point. Happy 100th, American Airlines.
