United Airlines is going above and beyond to be transparent and accommodating to passengers as the government shutdown continues to drag on. The Chicago-based carrier has posted a list of all of the flights that it is cancelling due to the FAA mandate.

As I wrote about earlier this week, United Airlines’ CEO, Scott Kirby, released a memo on Wednesday to address the schedule cuts. Flight schedules across 40 domestic airports started getting reduced today, November 7th. United is following the new directives from the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) and the Department of Transportation (DOT). The move comes as part of a coordinated industry-wide effort to ease pressure on the US aviation system.

United Cancellations

The way that United has presented this is easy to read and a simple resource for potentially impacted flyers. If you’re flying over the next few days on United, check the flight status here to see if it has been cut.

Anthony’s Take: This is a great resource and I’m glad United is offering this format. I wish the other US carriers would follow suit.

This list really helps show how the 10% cut affects far more than 10% of the actual airports. One example: I am in the MCI area. MCI is not on the list of affected airports mandated by the FAA, and many locals are rejoicing that we escaped it. What they failed to understand was that MCI is not a hub for any carrier, but most carriers fly here.

As an example, on Saturday the 8th, I see four flights, either to or from MCI on UA’s list. MCI’s #1 carrier in volume is WN, followed by DL, which is in competition with AA for second (AA and DL often have a similar number of flights, plus AS also operates here, so that helps the OW presence). UA is the FOURTH in volume and MCI is a business hub. November is hardly peak season (not this early) and yet four flights on Saturday are gone. That should be a stark anecdote of the impact at many local airports.

The children in DC need to put their big kid pants on and do their jobs. I myself plan to vote against anyone responsible for prolonging this shutdown.
