In August 2023, I wrote about a passenger on Delta Air Lines flight DL2432 from Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport (ATL) to Louis Armstrong New Orleans International Airport (MSY) who allegedly put a flight attendant in a chokehold and threatened to cut her head off with a shard of broken glass. Now, the passenger has been indicted by a grand jury for interfering with a flight attendant.
According to passenger reports, Nelson Montgomery (a 40-year-old passenger) had a neck injury. One of the flight attendants asked for medical assistance to treat his wound, which was described as bleeding “profusely.” Before he could be treated, he allegedly grabbed a flight attendant and held some broken glass to her neck saying that he was going to cut her head off if anyone approached him. Eight passengers reportedly tackled Montgomery and the flight attendant only suffered superficial cuts to her neck.

According to local news outlet, WDSU, Nelson was met by law enforcement when the plane landed and charged with aggravated battery, simple battery, and disturbing the peace. He was taken to a local hospital for treatment of his wound and was to be booked after being released from the hospital. On Thursday, a Louisiana Grand Jury charged him instead with one count of interference with a flight attendant. If he’s found guilty, Nelson could face up to 20 years imprisonment and a $250,000 fine.
Delta Air Lines released this statement at the time of the incident:
Delta flight 2432 operating from Atlanta to New Orleans was met by law enforcement personnel upon landing following a reported customer issue onboard. Delta has zero tolerance for unruly behavior on our aircraft and in our airports. Nothing is more important than the safety and security of our people and our customers.”
Anthony’s Take: Flight attendants should not have to deal with situations like this when they’re just trying to do their jobs. I’m not sure of the logic in indicting him on interference versus the original charges, but hopefully this sticks if all is true.
