Brazilian carrier GOL Linhas Aéreas is preparing to enter the long-haul market with the addition of Airbus A330-900 aircraft to its fleet. This move will allow the airline to launch intercontinental flights connecting Brazil with destinations in Europe and the United States.
The airline announced that it expects to receive up to five Airbus A330-900 aircraft, with deliveries scheduled in phases throughout 2026 and 2027. The widebody jets, capable of carrying nearly 300 passengers and flying routes of up to 15 hours, will mark the first time GOL operates aircraft designed for long-haul international service.
The aircraft were recently acquired by Abra Group, the parent company that oversees GOL and several other airlines in Latin America. Under the group’s strategy to strengthen regional connectivity, the Airbus A330neos will be allocated to GOL to expand international routes from Brazil.
GOL’s expansion comes as the airline seeks to capitalize on growing demand for air travel in Latin America. Speaking at the Routes Americas 2026 conference in Rio de Janeiro, GOL CEO Celso Ferrer said the airline aims to broaden its international network beyond its traditional markets and take advantage of a new phase of growth in the region. The introduction of widebody aircraft will allow GOL to connect major Brazilian hubs with long-haul destinations across the Atlantic and North America. While specific routes have not yet been announced, GOL has indicated that service could include flights from São Paulo/Guarulhos International Airport (GRU) to major cities in Europe and the United States.
The Airbus A330-900, part of the A330neo family, offers improved fuel efficiency compared with earlier widebody aircraft. GOL says the aircraft will support its focus on maintaining low operating costs while reducing carbon emissions per seat. The airline plans to maintain its reputation for operational reliability while expanding internationally, building on its status as one of Brazil’s most on-time carriers.
Alongside the new aircraft deliveries, GOL also announced an ACMI agreement (also known as a wet lease) with Wamos Air, which is another airline within the Abra Group. This group also owns Avianca. Under the arrangement, Wamos Air will provide aircraft, crew, maintenance, and insurance services to help GOL quickly expand capacity and manage demand as it launches new long-haul routes. The partnership will give the airline operational flexibility during the rollout of its intercontinental services.
In addition to its upcoming long-haul routes, GOL is also expanding regional and transcontinental connections across the Americas. One notable upcoming route will link Asunción’s Silvio Pettirossi International Airport (ASU) with Miami International Airport (MIA). This will create the only nonstop service between the two cities and the route will also become the longest Boeing 737 MAX flight currently operated anywhere in the world.
GOL currently operates an all-Boeing 737 fleet composed of both Next Generation and MAX aircraft. The airline has a total of 147 Boeing 737 aircraft (including 58 Boeing 737 MAX 8 jets). Headquartered in Rio de Janeiro, with its primary hub at São Paulo/Guarulhos International Airport (GRU), the airline completed a major financial restructuring last summer and is now positioning itself for renewed growth.
Celso Ferrer, CEO of GOL, said:
GOL was founded 25 years ago to transform aviation in Latin America. We currently operate in 12 countries, across more than 80 bases, and carry 30 million customers every year. Now, with the introduction of widebody operations, we are taking another step forward in our evolution – expanding our horizons and creating new products and services for our customers. In doing so, we will further connect Brazil to the world, while also enabling more people to experience the beauty of our country.”
Anthony’s Take: In the coming weeks, GOL plans to announce the first routes for its Airbus A330neo aircraft, along with ticket sales launch dates and details about onboard product upgrades designed for long-haul passengers.
