Frontier Airlines announced earlier today that it was taking a shot at American Airlines, Delta Air Lines, JetBlue, and United Airlines with new flights on some really competitive routes. The most competitive and puzzling was New York John F Kennedy International Airport (JFK) to/from Los Angeles International Airport (LAX). As soon as it made this public, it issued another press release cancelling the flights before they were even loaded for sale. This was a route that it was not going to win and I think that Frontier decided to pull the plug before losing any money here.
New York John F Kennedy International Airport (JFK) to/from Los Angeles International Airport (LAX) is currently served by JetBlue (up to 10x daily), Delta Air Lines (up to 10x daily), and American Airlines (up to 9x daily). This is in addition to service out of Newark Liberty International Airport (EWR) where United Airlines (up to 9x daily), JetBlue (up to 3x daily), Alaska Airlines (up to 3x daily), and Spirit Airlines (up to 2x daily) also fly. All of these airlines (with the exception of Alaska and Spirit) offer lie-flat seats. There was no way that Frontier could compete on this route in frequency, amenities, or comfort.
Anthony’s Take: This might be the fastest I have ever seen a route announced and cancelled. There was literally less than two hours between the press releases. Frontier made the right call as there was no way (even if they undercut price) that passengers on any of the other 30+ flights daily from the New York area and from LAX would switch to Frontier.
