Frontier Airlines just swung the axe and more than 40 routes were chopped from the map. While some of these may return in the future, the entirety of the list has either already been stopped or will be removed from the schedule in January or February.

Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport (ATL)

Six routes are being removed from Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport (ATL). Delta Air Lines flies all of these routes with the exception of Long Island MacArthur Airport (ISP). Going head to head with Delta is not easy and Frontier has pulled the plug on the following:

  • Grand Rapids Gerald R. Ford International Airport (GRR) (already ended)
  • Long Island MacArthur Airport (ISP) (already ended; no service on this route from any carrier nonstop)
  • Minneapolis-Saint Paul International Airport (MSP) (ends on January 6th)
  • Louis Armstrong New Orleans International Airport (MSY) (already ended)
  • Pittsburgh International Airport (PIT) (already ended)
  • Syracuse Hancock International Airport (SYR) (already ended)

Charlotte Douglas International Airport (CLT)

American’s North Carolina hub will see one less route from Frontier:

  • San Juan’s Luis Muñoz Marín International Airport (SJU) (ends on January 6th)

Cleveland Hopkins International Airport (CLE)

Once upon a time this was a hub for Continental Airlines. United scaled it way back and it’s never been the same. Frontier will cut six routes including:

  • Baltimore/Washington International Thurgood Marshall Airport (BWI) (already ended)
  • Charlotte Douglas International Airport (CLT) (ends on January 6th)
  • Houston’s George Bush Intercontinental Airport (IAH) (already ended)
  • Minneapolis-Saint Paul International Airport (MSP) (already ended)
  • Philadelphia International Airport (PHL) (already ended)
  • Raleigh–Durham International Airport (RDU) (ends on January 6th)

Cincinnati/Northern Kentucky International Airport (CVG)

This former Delta hub has also seen lots of cuts through the years after the Atlanta-based airline shifted away. Frontier is further cutting four routes from here. These will continue to be served by American, Delta, and United. They include:

  • Houston’s George Bush Intercontinental Airport (IAH) (ends on December 16th)
  • Minneapolis-Saint Paul International Airport (MSP) (already ended)
  • New York LaGuardia Airport (LGA) (ends on January 6th)
  • Philadelphia International Airport (PHL) (already ended)

Dallas Fort Worth International Airport (DFW)

Going against American Airlines at its biggest hub is risky. These seven routes are not working for Frontier and getting the cut:

  • Jacksonville International Airport (JAX) (already ended)
  • Nashville International Airport (BNA) (already ended)
  • Omaha’s Eppley Airfield (OMA) (already ended)
  • Pittsburgh International Airport (PIT) (already ended)
  • Sacramento International Airport (SMF) (already ended)
  • San Juan’s Luis Muñoz Marín International Airport (SJU) (ends on January 6th)
  • St. Louis Lambert International Airport (STL) (ends on January 5th)

Denver International Airport (DEN)

United and Frontier share Denver International Airport (DEN) as a hub. Frontier is ceding four routes to United, including:

  • John Glenn Columbus International Airport (CMH) (ends on January 5th)
  • Grand Rapids Gerald R. Ford International Airport (GRR) (ends on January 6th)
  • New York LaGuardia Airport (LGA) (ends on January 6th)
  • Syracuse Hancock International Airport (SYR) (already ended)

Ontario International Airport (ONT)

The Southern California city of Ontario is losing four routes. These include:

  • Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport (PHX) (already ended)
  • Portland International Airport (PDX) (ends on February 10th)
  • Sacramento International Airport (SMF) (ends on January 6th)
  • Salt Lake City International Airport (SLC) (ends on February 9th)

Philadelphia International Airport (PHL)

American’s Northeast hub will see less competition on these three routes:

  • Detroit Metropolitan Wayne County Airport (DTW) (already ended)
  • Minneapolis-Saint Paul International Airport (MSP) (already ended)
  • Pittsburgh International Airport (PIT) (already ended)

Raleigh–Durham International Airport (RDU)

Every airline seemed to be adding routes to and from Raleigh–Durham International Airport (RDU). While the airport seems to still be getting service from new carriers and routes added, Frontier is cutting nine routes, including:

  • Buffalo Niagara International Airport (BUF) (ends on January 6th)
  • Chicago Midway International Airport (MDW) (already ended)
  • Chicago O’Hare International Airport (ORD) (already ended)
  • Cincinnati/Northern Kentucky International Airport (CVG) (already ended)
  • Hartford’s Bradley International Airport (BDL) (already ended)
  • Indianapolis International Airport (IND) (ends on January 5th)
  • Louis Armstrong New Orleans International Airport (MSY) (already ended)
  • Pittsburgh International Airport (PIT) (already ended)
  • Syracuse Hancock International Airport (SYR) (already ended)

Anthony’s Take: Frontier Airlines has been making lots of changes. It’s introducing a true First Class cabin and continues to tweak its network. These cuts are pretty deep, but in almost every case they were going head to head with American, Delta, or United and that usually doesn’t end well.
