Florida lawmakers have passed legislation that would rename Palm Beach International Airport (PBI) in honor of President Donald Trump. They have now sent the measure to Governor Ron DeSantis for final approval. The bill cleared the Florida Senate on Thursday in a 25–11 vote, with all opposing votes coming from Democratic senators. The approval follows passage in the Florida House of Representatives earlier in the week (where lawmakers voted 81–30 in favor of the name change).

If signed into law by Governor DeSantis, the renaming would still require approval from the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) before taking effect. According to the bill’s text, the change would become official at the beginning of July. Supporters of the measure have framed it as recognition of Trump’s ties to the state. Trump, originally from New York, formally changed his primary residence to Florida in 2019. He declared his Mar-a-Lago property in Palm Beach as his permanent home and became the first president to declare permanent residency in Florida.

The proposed renaming comes amid broader efforts by Trump to attach his name to various buildings and initiatives. Republican leaders in Florida have said honoring Trump at the Palm Beach International Airport (PBI) reflects his connection to the region and his status as a Florida resident.

Palm Beach International Airport (PBI) serves as a key gateway to South Florida and is located just a short distance from Mar-a-Lago (Trump’s longtime private club and residence). With legislative approval now secured, the decision rests with Governor DeSantis and federal regulators before the airport’s name can officially change.

Anthony’s Take: Airports and buildings are usually named posthumously. This is definitely a break with that tradition. I can’t say I fly to Palm Beach too often and prefer Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport (FLL). There are some pretty funny memes circulating with the addition of a second name to the airport.

Hopefully the signs will be changed posthumously, next Tuesday.
