We decided to head home after having all of our belongings stolen from our rental car. I was fortunate to find award tickets on Air Dolomiti and Lufthansa to get us back to the United States. We spent the night at the Sheraton Milan Malpensa Airport Hotel & Conference Centre and arrived early for the short flight between Silvio Berlusconi Milan Malpensa Airport (MXP) and Munich International Airport (MUC).
Anthony’s Take: This was the second time we ever flew Air Dolomiti. The airline is part of the Lufthansa Group and serves several cities in Italy from Frankfurt Airport (FRA) and Munich International Airport (MUC). The flight was short, but the crew was friendly, we were provided with a meal, and we arrived early. Check-in was easy with the Lufthansa app and we did not have any issues with security using the mobile boarding passes.
Booking
This flight was booked as a one-way in Business Class from Silvio Berlusconi Milan Malpensa Airport (MXP) to Munich International Airport (MUC) and onward to New York John F Kennedy International Airport (JFK) (this segment was in First Class). I redeemed 140,000 United MileagePlus miles plus $66.81 per ticket. I felt really lucky to find two seats out of Milan that got us back to the United States one day after booking. I felt the cost was worth it since the tickets if paid for with cash was more than $13,000 each.
Silvio Berlusconi Milan Malpensa Airport (MXP)
The airport is modern and offered everything you would want when traveling to/from or transiting it. The airport is the largest in Northern Italy and where international flights arrive and depart from when heading to Milan. The airport was built in 1909 and is located inside the Parco Naturale Lombardo Della Valle Del Ticino, which is a nature reserve that’s listed by UNESCO in the World Network of Biosphere Reserves.
Lufthansa Business Lounge
We stopped by the Lufthansa Business Lounge (review here) and had breakfast. I love the consistency of Lufthansa’s lounges and always enjoy my visits. This one is open to Star Alliance Gold members and those flying in premium cabins with the Lufthansa Group.
Boarding
The flight boarded on time and in an orderly manner. Group 1 is HON Circle and First. There is no First Class on this plane and no HON Circle members were on this flight. Group 2 is Business Class, Miles & More Senator members, and Star Alliance Gold. We were in this group and managed to be the first on the plane. The announcements were clear and boarding was pretty laid back.
On-Board
Since I booked the flight only a day in advance, we got the last two seats. We ended up in 3D and 5D in Business Class. The first six rows of the cabin were designated Business Class in that only one of the two seats on each side were booked with the other remaining empty.
The seats could recline and had tray tables, but there were no outlets or USB ports. The aircraft was also not equipped with Wi-Fi (it did offer some entertainment including videos and digital newspapers).
Each seat had its own air vent and reading light.
A pocket held a safety card and menu for buy-on-board food and beverages.
A bottle of water and a wet wipe were provided upon boarding to Business Class passengers.
Food
Breakfast was served even though the flight was just a little over an hour. There was no choice. It was fresh fruit, yogurt, and a bread roll.
I had a ginger ale for a beverage.
A chocolate was passed out prior to landing.
Wi-Fi
As mentioned, there is no Wi-Fi available on the aircraft, but entertainment was offered on your personal device.
Lavatory
There are two lavatories on the aircraft. These are standard airplane bathrooms with a sink and toilet.
Service
The flight attendants were warm and friendly throughout the short flight. They brought out the meals, beverages, and offered additional drinks on the short flight.
Overall Impression:
The flight got us there early and offered friendly service along with breakfast. Outlets and Wi-Fi would have been nice, but it was a short flight and passed quickly.
