Fiji Airways is joining oneworld® in late 2024 (more here). Now, it has also been announced that it will be adopting American Airlines’ AAdvantage® loyalty program as its own next year.

This partnership will offer AAdvantage® members a seamless experience when traveling on Fiji Airways. They’ll receive benefits such as priority check-in, priority boarding, complimentary baggage allowance, preferred seats, and enhanced award redemptions. Full details around the integration including what benefits elite members will receive have not been fully released. Things like upgrades and what counts toward qualification remain to be seen.

Anmol Bhargava, American’s Vice President of Partnerships, said:

We are taking our partnership with Fiji Airways one step further by offering our mutual customers the opportunity to unlock more destinations and travel experiences through the AAdvantage® program. We look forward to welcoming Fiji Airways customers into the AAdvantage® program so they can experience all the ways we deliver on our commitment that travel is better as an AAdvantage® member.”

AAdvantage® is the longest running loyalty program and has evolved quite a bit since it launched in 1981. Where it used to award miles and status based on miles flown, it’s evolved into more of a lifestyle program with earnings for travel, shopping, and more.

Fiji AAdvantage

Fiji Airways serves 26 destinations in 15 countries and territories. This partnership coupled with its oneworld® membership will make it a much closer partner for American Airlines. Fiji Airways adopting American’s loyalty program reminds me of Copa Airlines using Continental’s loyalty program (and continuing to do so until 2015, which was five years after the merger with United).

Anthony’s Take: Fiji Airways joining AAdvantage® is a good idea for the carrier. American will bring it new customers and depending on the benefits this could be of interest to vacationing American flyers.
