The founder of online movie ticket marketplace Fandango was found “unconscious and unresponsive” at a New York City hotel on Tuesday morning. The New York City Police Department (NYPD) responded to a call at the Kimberly Hotel in Manhattan where J. Michael Cline was pronounced dead at 10:30 AM.
Officers responded to a call in Midtown and found Cline badly injured at the Kimberly Hotel. NYPD officers said the 64-year-old’s injuries were “indicative of a fall from an elevated position.” It appears that he jumped from the 20th floor of the hotel. They further stated that they do not see signs of foul play.
Cline founded Fandango in 1999 but left the company in 2011 (it’s now owned by NBCUniversal). His next ventures were a lab company called Acumen and a Accolade (a health service vendor). Cline was also a founding and managing partner at private equity firm Accretive and executive chairman at another venture fund called Juxtapose. He leaves behind a spouse and six children.
A heartbreaking suicide note was found at the hotel according to The New York Post. If you or someone you know is struggling with suicidal thoughts, the 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline can be reached by dialing 988 or by visiting the 988 Lifeline website.
Anthony’s Take: What a sad end for a man who seemingly had it all. You never know what people are going through and suicides like this one bring that point home.
