EVA Air revealed its new Premium Economy today. The latest iteration will launch on the carrier’s Boeing 787-9 aircraft. EVA claims to be the first airline to offer Premium Economy dating back to 1992.

The latest seats elevate the experience from “upgraded economy” to a more “business-class-like” experience. EVA’s Boeing 787-9 aircraft will be refitted with the new Premium Economy seats and the cabins will go from their current configuration (304 seats with 26 Business Class and 278 Economy Class) to 278 seats (26 Business Class, 28 Premium Economy, and 224 Economy Class seats). Premium Economy seats will be in a 2-3-2 configuration and offer 42 inches of pitch. They’ll also offer 15.6-inch personal entertainment screens as well as AC and USB charging ports.

The first reconfigured aircraft is expected to re-enter service on March 1st. It will fly between Taiwan Taoyuan International Airport (TPE) and Jakarta’s Soekarno-Hatta International Airport (CGK). Premium Economy will then be offered for destinations like Milan Malpensa Airport (MXP), Munich International Airport (MUC), San Francisco International Airport (SFO), and Vienna International Airport (VIE) by the end of 2025.

EVA Air 777-300ER

EVA Air currently offers 64 Premium Economy seats in its Boeing 777-300ER. These are in a 2-4-2 configuration and offer less pitch, smaller screens, and feel a bit dated. The airline has not announced plans to refit these aircraft. Interestingly, as EVA Air takes delivery of Boeing 787-10 aircraft they will not come with a Premium Economy cabin installed.

EVA Air President, Clay Sun, said:

As the world’s first airline to launch Premium Economy Class, EVA Air has consistently focused on innovation driven by passenger needs and setting industry trends. The fourth-generation seats retain the core philosophy of previous generations while enhancing comfort, fashion, and functionality, showcasing our commitment to service innovation and attention to detail.”

Anthony’s Take: EVA Air (especially a Hello Kitty plane) has long been on my list of carriers to try for a longhaul flight. Maybe I’ll get to fly it this summer if I can put together the right trip. I’ll fly Royal Laurel Class (Business Class), but the new Premium Economy seats look great.
