Lufthansa low-cost subsidiary Eurowings is adding true Business Class seating to the Airbus A320neo. It uses this aircraft for medium-haul routes and will be the first in the Lufthansa Group to offer an elevated seat in flight (all of the others have standard Economy Class seats with the middle one blocked. These are expected to roll out as a trial this year.

The new seats known as “Premium BIZ” will launch on Eurowings Berlin Brandenburg Airport (BER) to/from Dubai International Airport (DXB) route. The seats are designed by Italian manufacturer Geven and offer adjustable backrests, ergonomic design, and a 2×2 seating arrangement. These offer significantly more comfort and privacy than other European carriers’ narrow-body aircraft.

Eurowings plans to have these installed for flights that are scheduled in November. Tickets go on sale in August at www.eurowings.com. Eurowings will offer several seating options on these medium-haul routes. In addition to the Premium BIZ Seat (eight seats per aircraft), passengers can also choose between BIZclass (with a free middle seat and more legroom), SMART (optional additional legroom), and BASIC economy fares.

Jens Bischof, CEO Eurowings, said:

With our new Premium BIZ seat, we offer business travellers and holidaymakers a completely new level of comfort on medium-haul flights. More privacy and a significantly enhanced feel-good atmosphere make longer flights noticeably more pleasant. We are thus setting a new standard in our market segment and clearly positioning Eurowings as Europe’s leading value airline.”

Anthony’s Take: This is exciting news for Eurowings’ flyers. The airline seems to be the guinea pig of the Lufthansa Group. A few months ago I wrote about its cool pop-up coffee cart. I’m hopeful that it will also mean that other airlines in the group like Lufthansa and SWISS will implement similar seats in the future. We’ll have to wait and see how this test fares.

From a passenger perspective it’s tough to see this as a negative in any way. It’d be lovely to see the rest of Lufthansa Group airlines following suit.
