Passengers on easyJet flight U2 8216 from Heraklion International Airport “Nikos Kazantzakis” (HER) to London Gatwick Airport (LGW) found themselves evacuating after a vape exploded inside of a carry-on bag this past Tuesday. The fire filled the cabin with smoke and forced an evacuation using emergency slides at the airport.
Passengers said they heard “popping noises” coming from a power bank and e-cigarette that were inside of a carry-on bag. All 236 passengers were safely evacuated from the Airbus A321. No injuries were reported except for one passenger who suffered friction burns from the slide. Emergency personnel met the aircraft. The damage was minimal and the flight departed the same day (albeit quite late) according to The Independent.
Anthony’s Take: There is a reason why these devices and others with lithium ion batteries cannot go into the cargo hold. Thankfully, everyone here was fine and they reached their destination same day.
