Delta is often criticized for the costs of its award flights. There is no denying that tickets are generally costly when redeeming Delta SkyMiles® and the number of miles needed seem to keep climbing every year. When Delta has an award sale (especially one for its premium Delta One® cabin), it’s worth taking a look to see if there are any “bargains” to be had. While I would not say that these redemptions are cheap, there are opportunities to save and get tickets in line with what competitors charge if you have a stash of SkyMiles®.

One-way Delta One® tickets between the United States and Europe can be had for 99,000 SkyMiles® during this limited sale (it runs from today, December 17th to 19th). Routes included in this sale:

  • Amsterdam Airport Schiphol (AMS): Orlando International Airport (MCO)
  • Brussels Airport (BRU): New York John F Kennedy International Airport (JFK)
  • Dublin Airport (DUB): Boston Logan International Airport (BOS) and New York John F Kennedy International Airport (JFK)
  • Edinburgh Airport (EDI): New York John F Kennedy International Airport (JFK)
  • Frankfurt Airport (FRA): Detroit Metropolitan Wayne County Airport (DTW) and New York John F Kennedy International Airport (JFK)
  • Keflavík Airport (KEF): New York John F Kennedy International Airport (JFK)
  • Lisbon’s Humberto Delgado Airport (LIS): Boston Logan International Airport (BOS) and New York John F Kennedy International Airport (JFK)
  • London Heathrow Airport (LHR): Boston Logan International Airport (BOS), Detroit Metropolitan Wayne County Airport (DTW), Minneapolis-Saint Paul International Airport (MSP), Salt Lake City International Airport (SLC), and Seattle-Tacoma International Airport (SEA)
  • Adolfo Suárez Madrid-Barajas Airport (MAD): New York John F Kennedy International Airport (JFK)
  • Paris Charles de Gaulle Airport (CDG): Cincinnati/Northern Kentucky International Airport (CVG)
  • Zurich Airport (ZRH): New York John F Kennedy International Airport (JFK)

If you can snag one of these for 99,000 SkyMiles® (or even better at 84,150 with the 15% discount for holders of Delta co-branded American Express cards), than there is value there. SkyMiles® are easy to earn and United currently charges 80,000 miles or more for one-way flights to Europe. This is a nominal difference and the new reality of what award tickets cost.

Anthony’s Take: There are some relative bargains to be had here if you can find one of the highlighted sale routes available.
