Back in December 2023, I wrote about how Delta Air Lines was beginning to pay attention to Austin-Bergstrom International Airport (AUS). This continued this year as American Airlines retreated and cancelled routes. The airport is becoming more of a focus city for Delta (some might even say a mini-hub) as it just added five more nonstop routes.
The map above is now dated as Delta will begin flying to these additional cities:
- Indianapolis International Airport (IND) (1x daily; starts on May 7th)
- Memphis International Airport (MEM) (1x daily; starts on May 10th)
- Northwest Florida Beaches International Airport (ECP) (1x daily; starts on March 31st)
- San Francisco International Airport (SFO) (1x daily; starts on June 8th)
- Tampa International Airport (TPA) (1x daily; starts on June 8th)
The first three routes will be served with Embraer E175 aircraft and flown by SkyWest. These offer 12 First Class, 20 Comfort+, and 38 Main Cabin seats. The other two routes will be flown by Delta (not Delta Connection) and on Airbus A220-300 with 12 First Class, 30 Comfort+, and 88 Main Cabin seats.
Joe Esposito, Delta’s Senior Vice President of Network Planning, commented last December:
This expansion not only creates an access point to diverse opportunities for business, leisure, and cultural exploration spanning Texas and beyond but also solidifies Delta’s commitment to being a key player in Austin’s evolving landscape. Austin is growing rapidly, and this 20% increase in capacity mirrors that growth as we look to provide our customers with unparalleled convenience in the region.”
Delta seems to have figured out more of its strategy with Austin-Bergstrom International Airport (AUS). These routes are to larger cities where demand should be strong. Delta had been accused of squatting (holding its gates) with two random routes it launched:
- McAllen International Airport (MFE) (3x daily; 2x on Saturdays)
- Midland International Air & Space Port (MAF) (3x daily; 2x on Saturdays)
It’s now filling out the map nicely and giving Southwest a run for its money since American has largely abandoned Austin. With all of the additions, Delta will serve 21 cities from Austin-Bergstrom International Airport (AUS).
Anthony’s Take: Delta seems to want a Texas hub or at least a focus city and Austin is shaping up nicely. I’m excited that it will offer a nonstop option to Tampa International Airport (TPA).
