Sicily is my favorite part of Italy. It’s beautiful, inexpensive, and offers amazing food. I’ve been multiple times and can’t wait to go back. This week, both Delta Air Lines and United Airlines launched their respective flights to Palermo’s Falcone Borsellino Airport (PMO) and Catania-Fontanarossa Airport (CTA) making it easier than ever for Americans to get to this magical Italian island.
United Airlines announced that it would launch flights between Newark Liberty International Airport (EWR) and Palermo’s Falcone Borsellino Airport (PMO) in October 2024. The first flight took off last night and touched down today. The 3x weekly service runs on Sundays, Wednesdays, and Fridays through September 24th.
Delta Air Lines also commenced its Sicilian flights yesterday with service between New York John F Kennedy International Airport (JFK) and Catania-Fontanarossa Airport (CTA). These flights will run daily through October 24th.
Matteo Curcio, Delta’s Senior Vice President for Europe, the Middle East, Africa and India, said:
Catania will be the fifth Italian city served by Delta from the U.S., along with Rome, Milan, Venice, and Naples. Sicily is a highly sought-after destination and many Italian Americans have strong bonds with this wonderful Italian region. We are convinced that our service will benefit the region’s economy with regards to incoming tourism, as well as offering great connectivity to the U.S. for Sicilians.”
If you’re more a fan of The Godfather, head to Palermo. If The White Lotus season two caught your attention, Catania is the easiest way to get to Taormina where a lot of the show took place. Either airport provides easy access and Sicily is small enough to get around the entire island. I’ve driven it all and also flown in and out of both airports. Those flights always required a connection in Europe with flights on Lufthansa, ITA Airways, and Ryanair as the carriers I have flown before.
Anthony’s Take: I love that I can now fly nonstop to two Sicilian airports from the NYC area. United and Delta are the only major carriers connecting the United States and Sicily nonstop. I say major as Italian carrier neos also flies between New York John F Kennedy International Airport (JFK) and Palermo’s Falcone Borsellino Airport (PMO) seasonally. I hope both routes do well and return next year.
