The political situation between the United States and Canada has been rather tense during the current presidency to put it mildly. Talk of making Canada the 51st state and steep tariffs have created issues with our neighbors to the north. It looked like travel demand was quickly dropping, but I had no idea just how bad it actually was between the United States and Canada. OAG Aviation Worldwide Limited released some rather startling statistics in late March that show that there had been a drop of around 70% in passenger bookings when compared to the same time in 2024. Airlines have been responding to reduced demand by chopping frequencies and routes altogether. Previously, I’ve covered plans by Flair, WestJet, and United Airlines (more here). Now, Delta Air Lines is chopping one route and JetBlue has cancelled another before it even started.

JetBlue New Livery

Delta’s daily flight between Salt Lake City International Airport (SLC) and Toronto Pearson International Airport (YYZ) will end on November 5th. JetBlue is pulling the plug on its planned launch for flights between New York LaGuardia Airport (LGA) and Halifax Stanfield International Airport (YHZ). American and Delta both fly this route seasonally.

None of this should come as a surprise given the current rhetoric. Air Canada announced a massive winter schedule today and there was not a single new flight to the United States. All routes being added focused on Latin America and the Caribbean.

Anthony’s Take: I fear that we will see many other cuts to routes between Canada and the United States. Canadians are pushing off US holidays and Americans are gearing up for recession. This makes for a less than ideal combination.

We’ve shifted a lot of our travel this year TO Canada, as they deserve our support in this challenging time. I don’t blame their people for not coming here…
