Last month, Delta Air Lines is put its route planning up for a vote. Through the airline’s first-ever Route Race, it invited SkyMiles Members and Delta employees to choose which new Mediterranean destination would join its network in summer 2026. The airline just released the results and it’s a tie for new routes to be added. Both Malta International Airport (MLA) and Sardinia’s Olbia-Costa Smeralda-Prince Karim Aga Khan IV Airport (OLB) will be added to Delta’s route map next year.
SkyMiles Members and Delta employees were invited to decide which new European destination would join the airline’s route network for summer 2026. Thousands of votes were cast and passengers chose Sardinia while employees picked Malta. It’s interesting to note that Ibiza did not make the cut. Voting was held from August 25th to 29th. Each vote (of the nearly 150,000 received) helped decide which Delta Mediterranean route should be added to the map next summer, which was a first for the airline.
Both routes will operate 3x weekly from New York John F Kennedy International Airport (JFK) and will be flown with Boeing 767-300ER aircraft. These offer 26 Delta One®, 18 Delta Premium Select, 21 Delta Comfort, and 151 Delta Main seats. Flights to Sardinia begin on May 20th and those to Malta start on June 7th.
Anthony’s Take: You can’t go wrong with either destination. Both are beautiful and have their own charms. Sardinia has some of the most beautiful beaches and Malta offers tons of history as well as sun.

Damn. I was hoping that an airline that doesn’t charge 2,300,000 miles for a one way business class saver award would fly to Malta from the USA.
LOL
