New York LaGuardia Airport (LGA) was forced to shut down this morning following a deadly overnight collision between a regional Air Canada jet and an airport vehicle. Two pilots were killed and dozens of passengers were injured during the incident. The crash occurred late Sunday night after Air Canada flight AC 8646, operated by Jazz Aviation, arrived from Montréal-Trudeau International Airport (YUL) and was taxiing on the runway.

According to officials, the aircraft struck a Port Authority Aircraft Rescue and Firefighting vehicle that had been responding to a separate incident on the airfield. The impact caused severe damage to the front of the aircraft and resulted in the deaths of both the pilot and co-pilot. Authorities have not yet released their identities pending notification of next of kin.

At least 41 people were transported to nearby hospitals following the collision (including 39 passengers and two Port Authority officers). Officials said several individuals sustained serious injuries, though many have since been treated and released. The injured Port Authority officers remain in stable condition. Emergency responders were quickly deployed to the scene and all passengers were accounted for. An unaccompanied minor on board was safely reunited with family members.

New York LaGuardia Airport (LGA) was closed following the incident to allow for a full investigation. Operations suspended until early this afternoon. The closure caused widespread disruption. At least 18 flights diverted to New York John F Kennedy International Airport (JFK) and Newark Liberty International Airport (EWR).

Preliminary information suggests the aircraft had landed on Runway 4 and was rolling out when the collision occurred. Air traffic control recordings indicate the airport vehicle had been cleared to cross the runway but was later instructed to stop moments before impact. The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) has deployed a team to investigate the cause of the accident with officials already on site in the early hours following the crash.

Ground collisions involving aircraft and airport vehicles are rare but can have severe consequences (particularly in busy airspace environments like New York). The incident raises questions about runway coordination and communication between air traffic control and ground operations. Investigators are working to determine how the collision occurred.

Anthony’s Take: As the investigation continues, the focus remains on understanding the chain of events that led to the crash and preventing similar incidents in the future. My condolences to the families and friends of those lost and I hope the many injured are able to recover quickly.
