I have seen passengers clip their nails (both fingers and toes) and do all sorts of other personal grooming while seated on an aircraft through the years. Some of this is inoffensive like putting on lipstick while other actions are just gross (the aforementioned nail clipping). A TikTok video was recently posted showing a woman seated in Delta Comfort curling her hair and completely oblivious to the passengers around her.

The video has been viewed more than 3.7 million times and commenters are divided on whether this is okay. My take: it’s not.

TSA Curling Iron

While the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) allows you to carry curling irons on aircraft, they are not meant to be used at your seat. This poses both a burn and fire hazard. Suppose there was turbulence and she slipped. She could have burned herself, other passengers, melted part of the seat, or started a fire. This is dangerous and should not be attempted even if you physically can do it. I’m shocked the flight attendants did not step in and tell her to put it away.

Anthony’s Take: Just because you can do something doesn’t mean you should do something. Have some regard for the passengers around you and style your hair once you have landed and gotten off of the aircraft.
