A male passenger at Chicago O’Hare International Airport (ORD) told police that he had “a little weed” in his luggage. What they actually discovered? The man was carrying 41 pounds of marijuana.
Rhashad Barnes flew from California to Chicago with two bags filled with the hefty load of pot. The Sacramento County Sheriff’s Office notified the Chicago Police Department (CPD) while the man was in flight on board a United Airlines aircraft. CPD had received photos of the man, his suitcases, their contents, and his luggage tags. The plan was to arrest him upon arrival. Police approached him after he retrieved his bags and asked about the contents. Barnes said that they contained “a little weed.” When police searched them, they discovered 41 individual bags with the contents valued at $296,024.
According to CWB Chicago, Barnes was charged with one count of cannabis trafficking. CPD supervisors sent him to court for a detention hearing (because he could be a flight risk). Prosecutors did not request a detention petition and Judge Antara Nath released him with an order to appear in court on September 10th.
Anthony’s Take: I am for the legal use and consumption of marijuana. I see it as a way to generate tax money and feel that it should not be treated any differently than alcohol. This is not a matter of a stray joint in a bag. With this quantity there had to be a larger plan.
