American Express ceased publication of its excellent Departures magazine back in March 2021. I loved receiving the magazine each month for carrying The Platinum Card® from American Express. It was packed with expensive things to daydream about as well as lots of interesting travel content. The void has apparently been felt by others over the past three years as Chase is starting to send select cardmembers its new print magazine.

There are very few details around the new magazine (including its name), but it’s being helmed by Chase Travel’s Executive Director of Content, Zach Honig. He’s formerly from The Points Guy and he was at rival PC Magazine back when I was working for LAPTOP Magazine. From what can briefly be seen above, the magazine looks gorgeous.

This will be sent to some Chase Sapphire Reserve® and Chase Sapphire Preferred® Card members. Selection criteria was also not disclosed. Print magazines were thought to be dying for many years and reports of their death seem to be a bit exaggerated. While print is not the most popular vehicle for advertisers, it still has its place (especially in certain verticals like travel and fashion are largely image driven). Ads in magazines also seem to be performing. A recent study from the News/Media Alliance: Magazine Media: Influential, Engaged & Action-Oriented found that 57% of respondents said ads in magazines fit well with the content. MediaPost reports that “78% of readers say they take an action after seeing an ad in a magazine. Some look for information about the product (25%) or visit the advertiser’s website (23%).”

Anthony’s Take: I hope that I get a copy of this new magazine. It looks great and Zach has produced excellent content in the past.
