Delta Air Lines operates its largest hub at Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport (ATL). New York John F Kennedy International Airport (JFK) is its key hub for international flights. Both of these spaces are fiercely protected and Delta does not take kindly to others flying from its hubs. Frontier Airlines is taking a chance and launching flights between these two hubs.

This is the third new route Frontier Airlines has recently announced and it will fly daily starting on August 13th. This follows shortly behind the news that Frontier is also beginning flights to Las Vegas Harry Reid International Airport (LAS) and San Juan’s Luis Muñoz Marín International Airport (SJU) from New York John F Kennedy International Airport (JFK).
Interestingly, Frontier Airlines announced earlier this month that it was taking other shots at American Airlines, Delta Air Lines, JetBlue, and United Airlines with new flights on some really competitive routes. The most competitive and puzzling was New York John F Kennedy International Airport (JFK) to/from Los Angeles International Airport (LAX). As soon as it made this public, Frontier issued another press release cancelling the flights before they were even loaded for sale. This was a route that it was not going to win and I think that Frontier decided to pull the plug before losing any money here.
We’ll see how these other new routes fare, but I predict that service to Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport (ATL) is not going to be long lived. In addition to Delta flying between its hubs (7x daily), JetBlue also flies this route 2x daily. Frontier’s flight from Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport (ATL) has a 5:45 AM departure time, which will also not appeal to many travelers.

Josh Flyr, Vice President of Network and Operations Design at Frontier Airlines, said:

Anthony’s Take: Frontier is trying to pivot its route network as it has seen several business challenges this year. Taking on established routes from Delta’s hubs is likely not going to end well.
