A JetBlue flight between Boston Logan International Airport (BOS) and Los Angeles International Airport (LAX) saw its cabin fill with smoke yesterday after a cell phone caught on fire in the front cabin. Flight attendants quickly put the fire out and placed the malfunctioning device in the lavatory once the fire was extinguished as the aircraft was in its final descent.

Flight B6 988 (operated by an Airbus A321) arrived 13 minutes early and passengers were able to deplane safely. No injuries were reported. Laura Benson of Brockton, MA was a passenger on the flight. CBS News reports that she told WBZ-TV the following:

I saw really thick, heavy smoke billowing out of the seat area. You smelled the plastic first, like a really harsh smell, and then the cabin just filled up with smoke and you saw the crew go right into action.

They went and they got the fire extinguisher, made sure that everyone was safe and out of the seat and that they were actually safely put into other seats, and then they announced that they were putting the air on to get the air cleared up because at that point your eyes started hurting.”

JetBlue is working on investigating the incident and commended the crew for its quick work in containing the situation.

Anthony’s Take: There is a reason why flight attendants make announcements around being careful with damaged devices while in flight. I’m glad that this crew handled the issue and that there were no injuries.
