How would you like to clear airport security and check your bags before even setting foot in Boston Logan International Airport (BOS)? That vision may soon become reality. Massport officials announced plans for a remote terminal pilot program designed to reduce congestion and streamline the travel experience. The initiative is set to launch in summer 2026 and would allow passengers to complete TSA screening at an off-site location in Framingham, MA and then travel to the airport on a secure shuttle bus.
How the Remote TSA Screening Will Work
The pilot program will be based at the Logan Express bus stop in Framingham, MA. It’s roughly 22 miles west of Boston Logan International Airport (BOS). The process will work as follows:
- Reservation Required: Travelers will book a reservation online for a specific bus departure during the pilot phase.
- Check-In & Screening: Passengers check their bags and go through a full TSA screening process at the Framingham terminal. Carry-on and checked luggage are securely separated and stored under the bus in TSA-approved compartments.
- Secure Shuttle Ride: Passengers board a secure bus directly to Boston Logan International Airport (BOS). Buses will run every hour, with capacity for 15–30 passengers per trip.
- Straight to the Gate: Upon arrival at the airport, passengers skip traditional security checkpoints and head directly to their gates.
Massport officials designed the program to reduce traffic congestion in and around the airport and to decrease TSA wait times inside the airport. A similar off-site screening system is currently in place at Philadelphia International Airport (PHL). The remote TSA screening pilot could be especially valuable for frequent flyers who are frustrated by the airport’s notoriously long security lines, TSA PreCheck and CLEAR members seeking an even faster alternative, families and leisure travelers looking for a smoother start to their trips.
The program will complement existing services like TSA PreCheck and Global Entry rather than replace them. Travelers will still need those memberships for expedited screening at other airports. The pilot is scheduled to run from June through August 2026. If successful, Massport hopes to expand the service to other Logan Express locations, including Braintree and Woburn. This expansion could pave the way for off-site TSA screening programs at other major US airports and revolutionize the way travelers experience airport security nationwide.
Anthony’s Take: Travelers coming into the airport pre-screened will definitely help to the alleviate the security lines at the airport. Let’s see how this works and if adoption spreads to other cities.
