A few weeks ago, I wrote about ITA Airways shifting from its Volare loyalty program to Miles & More as the airline continues its transition from SkyTeam to Star Alliance and deeper integration with the Lufthansa Group. That change occurred yesterday. Now, Star Alliance will officially welcome ITA Airways as its newest member tomorrow (April 1sr) to complete the Italian carrier’s transition into the world’s largest airline alliance and significantly strengthening its connectivity across Southern Europe.
The milestone was marked with a formal ceremony at the Piazza di Spagna Lounge in Terminal 3 at Rome Fiumicino Airport (FCO). It was attended by senior executives from ITA Airways, Star Alliance, and Lufthansa Group along with media and institutional guests.
With its entry into Star Alliance, ITA Airways brings more than 350 daily flights into the network while serving over 16 million passengers annually. The airline’s strong domestic and regional presence enhances access across Italy while linking key international markets. The integration connects ITA Airways’ primary hubs at Rome Fiumicino Airport (FCO) and Milan Linate Airport (LIN) with the broader Star Alliance network, which now spans more than 1,150 destinations worldwide.

Passengers can now benefit from a fully integrated travel experience across the alliance. This includes through check-in across connecting flights, access to Star Alliance lounges and reciprocal recognition of frequent flyer status. Eligible travelers can earn and redeem miles across member airlines while Star Alliance Gold members gain access to ITA Airways lounges in Rome, Milan, and Catania.
The addition of ITA Airways enhances connectivity between Italy and key global markets, particularly across Europe, North America, and beyond. It also improves travel options within Southern Europe and makes it easier for passengers to connect through Italy to destinations worldwide.
With ITA Airways joining, Star Alliance now includes 26 member airlines and offers more than 17,500 daily flights across a network that spans over 190 countries. The move underscores the alliance’s continued expansion and its focus on delivering a more unified and seamless experience for international travelers. For ITA Airways, joining Star Alliance represents a key step in its evolution and alignment with Lufthansa Group while reinforcing its role in global aviation while expanding benefits for its customers.
Anthony’s Take: As integration takes effect, travelers can expect smoother connections, enhanced loyalty perks, and greater access to destinations worldwide through one of the most comprehensive airline networks in operation today.
