Raleigh-Durham International Airport (RDU) has gotten its fair share of nonstop international flights recently added to its offerings. Air France launched nonstop service to Paris Charles de Gaulle Airport (CDG) a few weeks ago (more here) and Lufthansa is adding service to Frankfurt am Main Airport (FRA) in June (more here). Now, Bahamasair will bring back its flights to this growing North Carolina airport.

Flights between Raleigh-Durham International Airport (RDU) and The Bahamas’ Grand Bahama International Airport (FPO) in Freeport will operate 2x weekly on Thursdays and Sundays year-round using Boeing 737 aircraft. This is the fifth US destination that Bahamasair serves with other flights to Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport (FLL), Miami International Airport (MIA), Orlando International Airport (MCO), and Palm Beach International Airport (PBI).

Nassau

Passengers wishing to reach Nassau’s Lynden Pindling International Airport (NAS) can continue on from Grand Bahama International Airport (FPO) with just a brief layover. Flights begin on November 12th.

The Honorable I. Chester Cooper, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Tourism, Investments & Aviation, said:

We are excited to relaunch the direct RDU Bahamasair service, especially ahead of the holiday season and winter months. With a short two-hour flight time, North Carolinians can easily escape to the warmth of the tropics. To top it off, Freeport and Nassau have activities to suit every traveller’s style and budget, from family friendly outdoor excursions and all-inclusive hotels with pool and play areas, to world-class luxury resorts. We cannot wait to welcome you all to our sun-kissed Bahamian shores!”

Anthony’s Take: I’ve seen Bahamasair planes taxiing in Florida, but never flown the carrier. It’s great to see it expanding further into the US.

Atlantis is in NASSAU. Two different islands. I hope readers don’t confuse Freeport (FPO ) with Nassau (NAS).
They will be in for a big surprise.

As the head of network planning at an airline where I used to work said, Freeport is always giving away huge incentives to get airlines to start service because “NOBODY wants to go to Freeport!”
