Avianca announced today that it will move its operations to the upcoming Terminal 6 at New York John F Kennedy International Airport (JFK). It is the 14th carrier to sign on (and the first from Latin America). It joins most Star Alliance airlines, Aer Lingus, Condor, Cathay Pacific, SAS, JetBlue, and other international carriers that have made plans to inhabit the new space when it opens in 2026.

Earlier today, I wrote about Air China deciding to move into the upcoming Terminal One. It’s joining fellow Star Alliance members Air New Zealand, EVA Air, LOT Polish Airlines, and Turkish Airlines in the new space. I thought Avianca might shift from Terminal 4 to there as well, but it’s moving to be near Air Canada, All Nippon Airways (ANA), Lufthansa, SWISS, Austrian Airlines, and Brussels Airlines in Terminal 6 instead. It’s interesting to note that JetBlue has also signed on for this space and if a merger were to occur that would put United in the same terminal as many of its closest Star Alliance and joint venture partners.

Terminal 6 is a key element of the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey’s $19 billion transformation of New York John F Kennedy International Airport (JFK) with two new terminals, two expanded and modernized terminals, a new ground transportation center, and a simplified roadway. Avianca currently flies up to 10 direct flights per day from New York John F Kennedy International Airport (JFK) to more than six destinations across Central and South America using Airbus A320 aircraft.

The new Terminal 6 will offer a digital-first, boutique guest experience that provides less than five-minute average walks from the TSA security checkpoint to all of the terminal’s gates,100,000 square feet of NYC-inspired shopping, dining, lounges, and amenities. The project is being managed by the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey and JFK Millennium Partners.

Anthony’s Take: The new Terminal 6 and the rest of the renovations at New York John F Kennedy International Airport (JFK) look amazing. I won’t be heading there anytime soon though as the construction and resulting traffic is horrendous, but once complete this looks like a great option for international trips.

19 BILLION DOLLARS and they can cant have a normal train to the airport that should be basic for a major international airport, instead you have an air train to the LIRR which is a commuter train and not convenient.
