Avelo Airlines is a low-cost carrier that launched in 2021. The airline operates a fleet of modern Boeing 737 aircraft and serves destinations across the United States. Avelo competes with Spirit Airways, Breeze Airways, Allegiant Air, Frontier Airlines, and Sun Country Airlines. The airline announced yesterday that it is adding service to a central Florida airport that has not seen passenger service in more than 10 years. Lakeland Linder International Airport (LAL) is a 35-minute drive from me in Tampa.

New flights to/from Tweed-New Haven Regional Airport (HVN) will commence on June 13th with flights 2x weekly (on Thursdays and Saturdays). I had never heard of this airport and its lack of current passenger service might be the reason why.

Defunct airline, Direct Air flew Boeing 737s to/from Myrtle Beach International Airport (MYR), Niagara Falls International Airport (IAG), and Niagara Falls International Airport (SPI) in Springfield, IL. It ceased operations in 2012. The airport has been home to the southeast regional air cargo hub for Amazon Air since July 2020.

Avelo Airlines Chairman and CEO, Andrew Levy, said:

We’re proud to be the only airline serving LAL and are excited to introduce Lakeland to Avelo’s low fares, travel-friendly convenience, and industry-leading reliability. Getting to Southern Connecticut – the gateway to New England and New York – is now easier than ever.”

Anthony’s Take: We’re debating whether we’re going to stay in Florida longer this year. If I’m still here, I might try to catch the inaugural flight as it will be my first chance to fly Avelo as well as the opportunity to be on the first flight from Lakeland Linder International Airport (LAL) since 2012.

Well, Avelo does say they’re trying to fly underserved markets and I’d certainly say this qualifies.

Booked on the inaugural northbound… looking forward to it. And conveniently (well, with a 3 hour sit) I can fly back from HVN right to USA which is 3 miles from my front door.
