Avelo Airlines is a low-cost carrier that launched in 2021. The airline operates a fleet of modern Boeing 737 aircraft and serves destinations across the United States. Avelo competes with Spirit Airways, Breeze Airways, Allegiant Air, Frontier Airlines, and Sun Country Airlines. It’s currently celebrating its third birthday and has been aggressively adding new routes, new destinations, and just opened its sixth aircraft base.
The airline currently flies 77 routes across 52 destinations. It looks to add flights to underserved airports and tiny markets. One recent example is the new flights it will offer from Lakeland Linder International Airport (LAL). It’s a 35-minute drive from me in Tampa and is closer to attractions like Walt Disney World without all the hassle of Orlando International Airport (MCO). I’m planning on taking the inaugural flight to Tweed-New Haven Regional Airport (HVN) on June 13th. Lakeland has not seen commercial service in over 10 years, so this is exciting news for locals.
In the next few months, 10 new destinations will begin seeing Avelo planes. These include:
- Albany International Airport (ALB) (Avelo arrives on May 10th)
- Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport (ATL) (Avelo arrives on May 2nd)
- Concord-Padgett Regional Airport (USA) (Avelo arrives on May 2nd)
- Destin-Fort Walton Beach Airport (VPS) (Avelo arrives on May 17th)
- Houston’s William P. Hobby Airport (HOU) (Avelo arrives on May 14th)
- Knoxville’s McGhee Tyson Airport (TYS) (Avelo arrives on May 9th)
- Lakeland Linder International Airport (LAL) (Avelo arrives on June 13th)
- Miami International Airport (MIA) (Avelo arrives on June 9th)
- St. Louis Lambert International Airport (STL) (Avelo arrives on June 13th)
- Traverse City’s Cherry Capital Airport (TVC) (Avelo arrives on June 15th)
Avelo is currently the only airline serving Tweed-New Haven Regional Airport (HVN). It provides travelers in Connecticut an option that is more convenient than driving to New York or Boston. When they’re all launched, Avelo will offer 25 destinations from there.
For its third birthday, Avelo is offering a discount code and sweepstakes. For 30% off of base fares, use code 3YEARS. To enter the sweepstakes for a chance to win free flights, click here.
The airline also released some interesting stats. Since 2021, Avelo has:
- Flown more than 4.6 million Customers
- Operated more than 36,000 flights
- Expanded to 52 destinations
- Established more than 77 routes
- Achieved two consecutive profitable quarters (Q4 2023 and Q1 2024)
- Grown to 1,000 Crewmembers (employees)
- Grown to six aircraft bases
- Grown a fleet of 16 Boeing Next-Generation 737s
Anthony’s Take: Avelo Airline continues to grow and expand. It’s hitting underserved airports and making travel convenient for those outside of major airports (although it’s entering some of those). I look forward to my flight and checking out what this carrier has to offer on June 13th.

Any idea what the appeal is of New Haven?
From a consumer standpoint: New Haven is 1.5 hours from JFK and an hour from BDL (more with traffic). On site walkable parking is only $18 per day. From the airline’s standpoint: Between New Haven and Fairfield County, there are about 1.8 million people who want to avoid driving into NYC There are also no other airlines flying out of Tweed New Haven.
Interesting. I’m a bit surprised I hadn’t heard more about this option given that the population is so robust.
Only one stop out of Colorado Springs. Wish they would open up some more.
