Avelo Airlines launched in 2021 and operates a fleet of modern Boeing 737 aircraft. It serves 55 destinations across 24 states the United States, Mexico, and the Caribbean. It competes with Spirit Airways, Breeze Airways, Allegiant Air, Frontier Airlines, and Sun Country Airlines. Avelo has been aggressively tweaking the route network, adding new destinations, cutting some, and it opened a sixth aircraft base in June. This week, the airline added its 24th state and 55th destination with flights to/from Louis Armstrong New Orleans International Airport (MSY).
The new route will launch on November 11th and offer 2x weekly flights (on Thursdays and Sundays) between Tweed-New Haven Regional Airport (HVN) and Louis Armstrong New Orleans International Airport (MSY).
One way fares start at $79.
New Orleans has seen some recent additions from Breeze Airways. Last month, I wrote about the low-cost carrier adding flights between Las Vegas Harry Reid International Airport (LAS), Los Angeles International Airport (LAX), and the Big Easy. It will be interesting to see if Avelo adds more routes here as it is treading on Breeze’s newly-established focus city at the airport. Breeze also flies nonstop from Louis Armstrong New Orleans International Airport (MSY) to:
- Northwest Arkansas National Airport (XNA)
- Charleston International Airport (CHS)
- Louisville Muhammad Ali International Airport (SDF)
- Norfolk International Airport (ORF)
- Orlando International Airport (MCO)
- Pittsburgh International Airport (PIT)
- Raleigh-Durham International Airport (RDU)
- Richmond International Airport (RIC)
- Southwest Florida International Airport (RSW)
New Haven, say "Hello" to The Big Easy! đ¤ Fly nonstop from Tweed-New Haven Airport (HVN) to the vibrant streets of New Orleans (MSY) with ease. Enjoy the convenience of Tweedâs quick and stress-free airport on your way to great food and even better music! âď¸ pic.twitter.com/zLyQQ0riIV

Avelo is proud to be Connecticut’s Airline and continue growth in New Haven with a new route to New Orleans…With 27 nonstop destinations to choose from at Tweed, it’s easier than ever for travelers to experience our convenient, affordable and reliable air service. I appreciate the support Avelo has received from government, community and business leaders across the state and send special thanks to our awesome Connecticut Crewmembers who make it all happen.”
Anthony’s Take: As I’ve written many times before, I love how Breeze Airways and Avelo Airlines are connecting underserved airports and adding lots of fun, new lines to the route maps across the United States.

If you look at the destinations with highest demand on a zip code basis for area around New Haven, New Orleans is in the top five. Of those feasible to fly (I don’t think they could make Denver, and that’s a little long and thin for even Avelo) would be DTW/MSP/DFW. I have a feeling adding DTW or MSP on top of the recent ATL add would trigger a response.
But fascinating news out of HVN today as Breeze is starting service to like 10 cities, beginning with RSW on December 10th. I guess I need to buy a ticket….
Lots of news out of both. I just wrote about the Breeze Airways additions to New Haven.
