Austrian Airlines’ first transatlantic flight on its recently acquired Boeing 787-9 took off from Vienna International Airport (VIE) and is en route to New York John F Kennedy International Airport (JFK) as I write this post. This aircraft is a nice upgrade to Austrian’s aging flight of Boeing 767-300ERs and Boeing 777-200ERs.

While OE-LPL flies the inaugural service, OE-LPM is reportedly getting its full livery applied at Teruel Airport, in Spain.

In April 2023, Austrian Airlines announced that it was refreshing its longhaul aircraft with Boeing 787-9s. When all deliveries are received, the carrier will have 11 of this aircraft type in its fleet. As it accepts aircraft, it will retire the existing Boeing 767-300ERs and Boeing 777-200ERs (this will take until 2028 to be fully realized).
The Boeing 787-9s will be used to fly between Vienna International Airport (VIE) and both Chicago O’Hare International Airport (ORD) and New York John F Kennedy International Airport (JFK). I’ll be checking out this aircraft when I fly from Chicago next month as part of a trip to Puglia (the aircraft will be added to the Chicago route as of July 1st).
Lucky at One Mile at a Time reports that Austrian’s first two Boeing 787-9s were originally used by Bamboo Airways. These aircraft include 26 Business Class, 21 Premium Economy, and 247 Economy Class seats. The next five Boeing 787-9s will also be coming in from another airline. In this case, Lufthansa is shifting these planes to Austrian. I’ll be reporting back about the flight in Business Class and am excited about trying Austrian’s catering on a transatlantic flight and this new aircraft type for the airline.
Anthony’s Take: I’m excited for this flight and to see what this experience is like on Austrian. I am a fan of the Boeing 787-9 (and Dreamliners in general). I’ll report back with much more in July.
