American Airlines released some statistics today around what could be a record-breaking summer travel schedule. The airline expects to see nearly five American flights depart every minute (around one every 13 seconds), will check more than 50 million bags, serve more than 55 million packages of Biscoff® cookies as well as 240 million beverages on board, as vacation season comes roaring in.
Summer travel really kicks off with Memorial Day weekend. This year, American expects to operate nearly 38,000 flights between May 22nd and 27th (with 6,471 departures each day scheduled for May 22nd and May 23rd). July 6th is projected to be the busiest travel day of the summer and American is offering nearly 5% more flights than summer 2024 (with 20% more flights departing Chicago O’Hare International Airport (ORD) than last year).
When it comes to redemptions, American shared that Boston Logan International Airport (BOS), London Heathrow Airport (LHR), and Orlando International Airport (MCO) are the most redeemed cities in its AAdvantage® program.
Beginning today, American is testing new technology at its Dallas Fort Worth International Airport (DFW) hub that helps to identify departing flights with connecting customers who might miss those flights. If the airline determines it can delay the flight without any impact to the schedule, it will propose a short hold to get those connecting customers onboard. The technology was developed in-house by the American team and it helps to automate and enhance existing processes. This test will be expanded next to its Charlotte Douglass International Airport (CLT) hub, followed by others this summer.
This is similar to United’s ConnectionSaver. It also advises when planes should be held for late connecting passengers. I have seen this in action and it seems to work well (especially when not in hubs or for flights that do not occur frequently). It’s good to see American catching up here.
Anthony’s Take: American has been working hard to reverse course and be seen as a premium airline with customers in focus. Changes include the revamped mobile app, new lounges, more routes (especially from Chicago), and a new boarding process.
