American Airlines Launches Redesigned Mobile App

American Airlines is planning to launch a redesigned app before the end of May. While the app will immediately have a new look and feel, upgrades will be rolled out incrementally.

The airline engaged with passengers around the features and functionality that they would like to see included in the app. American says it delivered some of the most requested travel needs and requests including:

  • A personalized home screen with upcoming trips and AAdvantage® account information
  • A new section around AAdvantage® members’ accounts, status, and more
  • Another new section dedicated to all upcoming trips
  • Easy-to-use navigation with similar look and feel to other apps customers use in their daily lives
  • Inspiration about destinations to which American flies and ways to engage with the airline’s partners
  • iOS upgrades including Live Activities to display real-time flight updates on the lock screen

As the app continues to be updated, features will be added. Some of these include:

  • The ability to check in, add bags, and select seats
  • Adding a mobile boarding pass to your  mobile wallet on iOS
  • Access flight details on the Apple Watch
  • A chat feature to speak with an American Airlines agent
  • Easier to find boarding and departure times with Live Activities that do not require you to open the app
  • Watch free inflight entertainment during their flight
  • Utilize Siri shortcuts for tasks like accessing flight details
  • Access airport maps and turn-by-turn directions for wayfinding
  • Check driving time to airports
  • Rebook during flight disruptions
  • Add special services like requests for wheelchairs
  • View security wait times at DFW, LGA, JFK, PHX, and LHR

I think being able to view security wait times is a cool add. The rest of these features are pretty standard with good apps like the one United offers.

Heather Garboden, American’s Chief Customer Officer, said:

We’re dialed in to delivering on new ways to make our customers’ travels with us as easy as possible, so improving their most powerful tool — the app — is a significant focus of ours. Over the last year, our team has been taking feedback from customers to understand their pain points and wish lists to make sure we’re tailoring the next evolution of the app to deliver what they want most. This newly redesigned app is the first step in giving us a base that will allow us to continue to build and release new features so we can always deliver what customers value most.”

Anthony’s Take: It’s good to see American redesigning its app as I find it to be the weakest when compared to Delta and United. While the initial changes appear cosmetic, some of the new features will be much appreciated.
