Avelo Airlines is the only airline serving Delaware’s Wilmington Airport (ILG). Philadelphia International Airport (PHL) is a mere 27 miles away and serves as a hub for American Airlines. While Avelo flies to/from 13 destinations there, American serves tons more from its nearby hub. American is now testing what it calls “tarmac-to-tarmac” service and bussing customers from Delaware’s Wilmington Airport (ILG) to Philadelphia International Airport (PHL) on luxury motor coaches so that they may connect to anywhere American flies.
Beginning in October, American Airlines passengers will arrive at Delaware’s Wilmington Airport (ILG), check their bags, clear security, and then board busses bound for Philadelphia International Airport (PHL). The busses drop passengers off inside Terminal F on the airside with no need to re-clear security. Checked bags are loaded onto the bus and then brought to the airport. When passengers return, they claim their luggage at Wilmington Airport (ILG) baggage claim.
The Landline Company will provide the motorcoach service for American Airlines. The 35-seat busses offer free Wi-Fi, restrooms, and air conditioning. The company already serves nine other airports in Colorado, Minnesota, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, North Dakota, and Wisconsin. This will be the only one tied to an American Airlines flight.
Hannah Tamura, Marketing Specialist at The Landline Company, said:
Riding with Landline eliminates the hassle of trying to find a ride or driving and parking at PHL. The ability to clear TSA security at ILG instead of waiting in unpredictable security lines at PHL is added benefit.”
Passengers traveling from nearby Lehigh Valley International Airport (ABE), Wilkes-Barre/Scranton International Airport (AVP), and Atlantic City International Airport (ACY) can also book bus service, but without an American flight.
Anthony’s Take: I’m not a fan of busses, but this could cut down on a lot of the headaches of a big airport like the one in Philly. I guess it will come down to price and convenience for passengers to decide to take the bus on their next vacation.
