American Airlines has made a customer-friendly change that goes into effect today, July 1st. All passengers (not just those with elite status or in premium seats) can standby for same-day flights when flying domestically within the United States. This is a great move for American and will certainly make flyers happy.

Last year, American instituted a policy whereas you needed to be an AAdvantage® member, use the app or website, and be within 45 minutes of a flight to standby. This led to lots of confusion and frustration for passengers who wanted to change travel plans. Higher-level elite members (Platinum, Platinum Pro, and Executive Platinum) could still be added to the standby list up to 15 minutes before a flight, but all other flyers were not able to make a switch.

According to American:

Beginning tomorrow, July 1, all customers are eligible to list for same-day standby with an agent up to 45 minutes prior to departure – regardless of AAdvantage® membership or status. The policy is only applicable to domestic flights and segments.

We are continuously looking for ways to enhance the travel journey for our customers and this update gives all customers the convenience of a flexible itinerary, space permitting.”

Passengers looking to join the standby list for an alternate flight can do so up to 24 hours in advance on American’s website or up to 45 minutes of departure at the gate (the exception is Platinum, Platinum Pro, and Executive Platinum) can still go as late as 15 minutes before the flight.

Anthony’s Take: American is working to be more customer friendly and build back some of its lost business. Moves like this will certainly help with this mission.
