Back in July, I wrote about American Airlines and Porter Airlines requesting permission from the US Department of Transportation (DOT) to launch a reciprocal codeshare agreement. Today, the two carriers announced the official launch of this new codeshare partnership designed to expand travel options between the United States and Canada. This begins immediately and allows customers to book codeshare itineraries directly through American or Porter.
As part of the agreement, American Airlines will place its code on select Porter Airlines flights departing from Toronto Pearson International Airport (YYZ). This includes routes within Canada and the Toronto Pearson International Airport (YYZ) to/from Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport (PHX) route, with additional transborder flights to follow.
AAdvantage® members who purchase tickets for Porter-operated flights under the codeshare will earn AAdvantage® miles and Loyalty Points. American operates more flights to Toronto Pearson than any other US carrier (with over 25 peak daily flights). This provides travelers with a wide range of convenient options for seamless connections between the US, Toronto, and beyond.
Porter Airlines will place its code on a selection of American Airlines’ transborder and domestic flights, giving Canadian passengers access to a much broader network of destinations across the United States. The partnership centers on American’s hub airports, including:
- Charlotte Douglas International Airport (CLT)
- Chicago O’Hare International Airport (ORD)
- Dallas Fort Worth International Airport (DFW)
- Philadelphia International Airport (PHL)
Through these hubs, Porter customers will also gain access to American’s southern network, offering convenient connections to destinations in the Caribbean, Central America, and South America.
In addition to Toronto, American provides year-round service to Calgary International Airport (YYC), Montréal-Trudeau International Airport (YUL), and Vancouver International Airport (YVR). Seasonal service is also available to Halifax Stanfield International Airport (YHZ) and Québec City Jean Lesage International Airport (YQB), complementing Porter’s expanding domestic Canadian network.
The partnership will continue to evolve, with both airlines exploring:
- Additional codeshare destinations within both networks.
- Deeper loyalty integration, including reciprocal earning and redemption of points on both airlines.
By combining Porter’s strong Canadian presence with American’s expansive US and international network, this partnership creates new opportunities for both leisure and business travelers to access a greater range of destinations with more seamless travel experiences.
Porter Airlines is the third largest airline in Canada and the only one of the top three that is not partnered with a US carrier. Air Canada (the largest in Canada) is a member of Star Alliance and a close partner of United Airlines. WestJet (the number two airline in Canada) is aligned with Delta Air Lines (Korean Air and Delta just acquired a stake) as well as several other SkyTeam airlines. This left Porter Airlines and American Airlines as pretty much the only choice as partners, which they have seized upon.
Anthony’s Take: This will be better once (if) additional benefits are added. It’s good to be able to earn miles and Loyalty Points, but it would be nicer if there were other benefits as well.
