TSA PreCheck® Touchless ID is a government program that uses biometric facial recognition to match your live image to government-issued photo. You don’t need a boarding pass or photo ID and can breeze through security by simply allowing the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) to take a photo of you. American is rolling this technology out at four airports across the country.

Delta Air Lines and United Airlines already partner with the TSA for its PreCheck® Touchless ID. Delta is tied to Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport (ATL), Los Angeles International Airport (LAX), New York John F Kennedy International Airport (JFK), and New York LaGuardia Airport (LGA). United offers it at Chicago O’Hare International Airport (ORD) and Los Angeles International Airport (LAX).

American is now rolling out its own partnership at Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport (ATL) , New York LaGuardia Airport (LGA), Salt Lake City International Airport (SLC), and Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport (DCA). If AAdvantage® members want to participate, they must be at least 18 years of age and provide American with the following:

  • AAdvantage® number
  • Valid passport information
  • Known Traveler Number (KTN)

This can be handled on aa.com and once registered, members will see a green icon that signifies participation in PreCheck® Touchless ID.

Heather Garboden, American’s Chief Customer Officer, said:

We’re examining every aspect of the customer experience. TSA Precheck® Touchless ID helps streamline our customers’ travel experience and makes travel with us even more enjoyable. We look forward to it becoming available to even more customers in the coming months.”

Anthony’s Take: I love this program and it has saved me a lot of time at Chicago O’Hare International Airport (ORD). I think it will eventually replace CLEAR Plus. I look forward to this rolling out at more airports.

Atlanta? Salt Lake City? While I applaud American instituting this perhaps starting with either fortress hubs to retain their position or neutral airports like MSY, TPA, etc would bolster their position. If Isom thinks American is ready to go head to head against Delta in their own hubs then he’s even more delusional than I’d thought.
