American Airlines announced today that it’s adding some new leisure routes for those looking to escape the cold this coming winter. The Dallas-based carrier will offer more than 270 daily departures to popular beach destinations across Mexico, the Caribbean, Latin America, and South America including six new routes. One of these additions will serve as Oklahoma City’s Will Rogers International Airport (OKC) sole international offering.

On November 8th, American will begin flying between Oklahoma City’s Will Rogers International Airport (OKC) and Cancún International Airport (CUN). These flights will be operated on Saturdays using Boeing 737 aircraft and is the only international service currently slated for this Oklahoma airport. Additionally, American will begin flying to Punta Cana International Airport (PUJ) from Indianapolis International Airport (IND), Nashville International Airport (BNA), Pittsburgh International Airport (PIT), and Raleigh-Durham International Airport (RDU). These all begin on December 6th and fly 1x weekly on Saturdays.

Additionally, American will launch seasonal service between Miami International Airport (MIA) and Buenos Aires’ Ministro Pistarini International Airport (EZE) (4x daily; starts on December 18th) as well as Dallas Fort Worth International Airport (DFW) to/from São Paulo/Guarulhos–Governor André Franco Montoro International Airport (GRU) (10x weekly; starts on December 3rd).

Brian Znotins, American’s Senior Vice President of Network Planning, said:

American’s comprehensive global network is designed to give customers more access to the destinations they want to visit,. Together with new routes, more flights on popular routes and extended seasons to major destinations, American’s schedule is designed for travelers to get away to sun, sand and more next winter.”

American offers more service to warm-weather destinations than any other carrier. This includes up to 40 daily flights to Cancún International Airport (CUN) from 19 US cities as well as up to 20 daily flights to Punta Cana International Airport (PUJ)  from 11 US cities.

Anthony’s Take: The Caribbean, Mexico, Central America, and South America have been strong for quite some time. It’s good to see American acknowledge this and continue to build its network there.
