American Airlines is set to expand its transatlantic reach next spring with a new seasonal route connecting New York John F Kennedy International Airport (JFK) and Edinburgh Airport (EDI) in March 8th. The new service will provide US travelers with direct access to one of Europe’s most storied and scenic destinations, but it also marks the first US airline that is using the Airbus A321XLR for a transatlantic flight.

The addition of the this route builds on American’s existing seasonal flights between Philadelphia International Airport (PHL) and Edinburgh Airport (EDI), which began earlier this year. The new service expands transatlantic options for East Coast travelers and strengthens American’s presence in the UK market. The two routes will operate on complementary schedules and offer greater flexibility for both leisure and business travelers. Through American’s Atlantic Joint Business partnership with British Airways, customers can also seamlessly connect from Edinburgh to additional European destinations.

As mentioned above, flights on the new route will be operated by the Airbus A321XLR. This is the newest addition to American’s international fleet and it features 20 Flagship Suite®, 12 Premium Economy, and 123 Main Cabin seats. I love that there are true Business Class seats on a narrowbody aircraft.

Each cabin is designed to enhance the inflight experience:

  • Flagship Suite® passengers enjoy lie-flat seating, direct aisle access, wireless charging, and personalized storage.
  • Premium Economy travelers benefit from enhanced headrests, calf and footrests, and additional space to relax.
  • Main Cabin customers can expect complimentary meals and beverages, Wi-Fi, and seatback entertainment with Bluetooth connectivity.

Inflight dining will feature rotating monthly menus highlighting international flavors (all travelers will have access to complimentary snacks and beverages throughout the flight).

The new flights to Edinburgh mark American’s seventh new transatlantic route announced for summer 2026. Earlier in the year, the airline revealed new flights to Budapest Ferenc Liszt International Airport (BUD) and Václav Havel Airport Prague (PRG). As American continues to take delivery of additional Airbus A321XLR aircraft, it plans to deploy them on a range of transcontinental and international routes. The Airbus A321XLR is set to debut on New York John F Kennedy International Airport (JFK) to/from Los Angeles International Airport (LAX) flights in December (before joining international operations the following spring). Tickets for the Edinburgh route will be available starting November 3rd on American’s website and mobile app.

Anthony’s Take: I love the idea of flying this aircraft on shorter flights to Europe. It looks great and will open smaller markets where larger planes would not make sense based on demand.
