While summer is in full swing, American Airlines is looking ahead to a winter season filled with new destinations for skiers and beachgoers. Beginning this December, the airline will launch multiple new routes across the United States including two cities that American has not yet served: Sun Valley’s Friedman Memorial Airport (SUN) and Santa Maria Public Airport (SMX).
Starting on December 18th, American will offer daily, seasonal service from both Chicago O’Hare International Airport (ORD) and Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport (PHX) to Sun Valley’s Friedman Memorial Airport (SUN). These flights will run until April 6th. Both routes will be flown with Bombardier CRJ-700 aircraft. These offer nine First Class, 8 Main Cabin Extra, and 46 Main Cabin seats. Sun Valley is a popular spot for skiers and these two routes will offer more than 150 one-stop connections to the slopes.
American will also add flights between Chicago O’Hare International Airport (ORD) and both Missoula Montana Airport (MSO) and Santa Fe Regional Airport (SAF). These both kickoff on December 18th and run daily with the Santa Fe flights ending on January 6th. Missoula will see Embraer E175 aircraft with 12 First Class, 20 Main Cabin Extra, and 44 Main Cabin seats. Santa Fe will be served with Bombardier CRJ-700 aircraft.
Other new flights include:
- Los Angeles International Airport to/from Santa Fe Regional Airport (SAF) (daily; starts on October 6th)
- Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport (PHX) to/from Fort Myers’ Southwest Florida International Airport (RSW) (daily; runs between November 20th and December 3rd and December 18th and January 6th)
- Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport (PHX) to/from Santa Maria Public Airport (SMX) (2x daily; starts on October 15th)
Santa Maria Public Airport (SMX) is American’s 17th destination in California. The Central Coast city offers Santa Maria-style barbecue and wine tasting. American is the only commercial airline serving this airport other than Allegiant Air’s 2x weekly flights to/from Las Vegas Harry Reid International Airport (LAS).
Jason Reisinger, American’s Managing Director of Global Network Planning, said:
American is focused on giving our customers the most options to pick the perfect vacation destination, and now there are even more ways to turn travel dreams into reality. Earning AAdvantage® miles and status with American’s new summer routes is the perfect setup to planning winter holidays with friends and family.”
Anthony’s Take: American is definitely trying with new routes and service improvements. We’ll see how customers react, but it’s good to see it reinvesting in growing Chicago, especially.
