American Airlines has long seemed like it had been giving up on its hub at Chicago O’Hare International Airport (ORD). United Airlines is considerably larger with more than 40% of the market share at the airport (American held around 22% according to the most recent data) and has been touting itself as “Chicago’s Hometown Airline” as its headquarters is also located here. American is now starting to strike back and has added seven routes to its schedule this winter.

The biggest news for Chicagoans looking to escape the cold is that American will offer five new routes to warm weather, international destinations starting in November. These include:

  • Curaçao International Airport (CUR) (1x weekly on Saturdays; starts on December 6th)
  • Guatemala City’s La Aurora International Airport (GUA) (up to 3x weekly; starts on November 6th)
  • San José’s Juan Santamaría International Airport (SJO) (1x daily; starts on November 2nd)
  • Saint Croix’ Henry E. Rohlsen Airport (STX) (1x weekly on Saturdays; starts on December 6th)
  • Saint Martin’s Princess Juliana International Airport (SXM) (1x weekly on Saturdays; starts on November 8th)

In addition to these leisure routes, American is also adding two more US cities. These include:

  • Akron-Canton Airport (CAK) (2x daily; starts on October 6th)
  • Roanoke–Blacksburg Regional Airport (ROA) (daily; starts on August 6th)

Ben Humphrey, Vice President of American’s Operations at Chicago O’Hare International Airport (ORD), said:

As we get our first taste of spring in Chicago, we are already looking ahead to giving our customers a reprieve from the bitter Midwest winter with more than double the flights to popular vacation spots.”

In addition to the new routes, American is also boosting the frequency of many vacation hotspots this winter from Chicago O’Hare International Airport (ORD). These include:

  • Aruba’s Queen Beatrix International Airport (AUA) (1x daily; starts on December 18th)
  • Cancún International Airport (CUN) (up to 3x daily; starts on November 2nd)
  • Grand Cayman’s Owen Roberts International Airport (GCM) (1x daily; starts on December 18th)
  • Liberia’s Daniel Oduber Quirós International Airport (LIR) (1x daily; starts on December 18th)
  • Los Cabos International Airport (SJD) (up to 2x daily; starts on November 2nd)
  • Montego Bay’s Sangster International Airport (MBJ) (up to 2x daily; starts on November 2nd)
  • Nassau’s Lynden Pindling International Airport (NAS) (1x daily; starts on December 18th)
  • Puerto Vallarta International Airport (PVR) (2x daily; runs from December 18th to January 6th)
  • Saint Thomas Cyril E. King Airport (STT) (1x daily; starts on December 18th)
  • San Juan’s Luis Muñoz Marín International Airport (SJU) (up to 2x daily; starts on December 18th)

Anthony’s Take: It’s great to see American putting out some new routes and working to better compete with United at Chicago O’Hare International Airport (ORD).
