American Airlines is expanding once again, announcing new service from its hubs in Chicago O’Hare International Airport (ORD) and Los Angeles International Airport (LAX) as it looks to continue on its competition with United Airlines. The new routes reinforce the carrier’s strategy to build what it calls the most comprehensive domestic network in the country and adds connectivity to smaller and midsized markets as well as a long-haul flight to Hawaii.

From Chicago O’Hare International Airport (ORD), American will launch new year-round service to Allentown’s Lehigh Valley International Airport (ABE) and Columbia Metropolitan Airport (CAE). Both will operate 2x daily beginning May 21st. Later this year, American will also add seasonal service to/from Kahului Airport (OGG). This. will operate daily from December 17th through March 27th. The Maui route represents the most eye-catching addition as it marks a rare long-haul domestic expansion during a period when US carriers have mostly pared back similar additions.

From Los Angeles International Airport (LAX), American will add two new year-round routes beginning April 7th. This includes daily flights to/from Cleveland Hopkins International Airport (CLE) and daily flights to Washington Dulles International Airport (IAD). The Washington route will complement American’s existing  2x daily flights between Los Angeles International Airport (LAX) and Washington Reagan National Airport (DCA) to give travelers up to three daily choices between Los Angeles and the US capital region.
